This book examines the historical process that led to the foundation of the Italian Republic and its constitution, viewed through the personal experiences and political reflections of Adriano Olivetti (between 1919 and 1960), general manager and president of the well-known typewriter manufacturer “Ing. C. Olivetti & C.” An unbroken line of reasoning linked his maturing political reflections during the two post-war periods. The historical context of the 1950s did not prove to be very propitious, but the guidelines dispersed throughout the Italian cultural and political world from the movement that Olivetti founded were certainly seminal – generating a legacy of ideas that has only in part been recognized. What makes this study distinctive is the original approach to reading the history of Italy through Adriano Olivetti’s eyes and thoughts, far from the more common Christian Democratic or Communist perspective of those years. It is simply another view of what the Italian Republic could be and was not.

The European Union plays an increasingly central role in global relations from migration to trade to institutional financial solvency. The formation and continuation of these relations – their narratives and discourses - are rooted in social, political, and economic historical relations emerging at the founding of European states and then substantially augmented in the Post-WWII era. Any rethinking of our European narratives requires a contextualized analysis of the formation of hegemonic discourses. The book contributes to the ongoing process of "rethinking" the European project, identity, and institutions, brought about by the end of the Cold war and the current economic and political crisis. Starting from the principle that the present European crisis goes hand in hand with the crisis of its hegemonic discourse, the aim of the volume is to rescue the complexity, the richness, the ambiguity of the discourses on Europe as opposed to the present simplification. The multidisciplinary approach and the long-term perspective permits illuminating scope over multiple discourses, historical periods, and different "languages", including that of the European institutions. Adriano Olivetti è un mito dell'industria, della creatività e della cultura italiana nel mondo. È un italiano del Novecento profondamente atipico. In questo libro definitivo, frutto di un decennio di ricerche e di scrittura, Paolo Bricco ripercorre la vita di un uomo di genio e la vicenda industriale e sociale, politica e culturale dell'Italia tra la fine dell'Ottocento e il boom economico. Questa è, prima di tutto, la storia di un'utopia. Inaugurando nel 1955 la fabbrica di Pozzuoli, Olivetti presenta così gli obiettivi della sua impresa: "La nostra Società crede nei valori spirituali, nei valori della scienza, crede nei valori dell'arte, crede nei valori della cultura, crede, infine, che gli ideali di giustizia non possano essere estraniati dalle contese ancora ineliminate fra capitale e lavoro. Crede soprattutto nell'uomo, nella sua fiamma divina, nella sua possibilità di elevazione e di riscatto". A questa utopia concreta - almeno in parte realizzata - concorrono condizioni di lavoro per i dipendenti tuttora senza paragoni e la ricerca attiva di una bellezza che coinvolge la meccanica e il design (le macchine per scrivere e le calcolatrici), l'architettura delle fabbriche e l'estetica dei negozi sparsi nel mondo. Ma questo libro non è un'agiografia e di Adriano Olivetti mostra le contraddizioni, i conflitti e le generose incompiutezze: i legami profondi e tormentati con i famigliari, le due mogli e le altre donne amate; la passione per l'organizzazione scientifica del lavoro e l'attrazione per la spiritualità, l'astrologia e la sapienza orientale; il complesso percorso dal socialismo di famiglia degli anni Venti all'adesione teorica al corporativismo e al suo concreto inserimento nella società fascista degli anni Trenta; gli avventurosi rapporti, alla caduta del regime, con i servizi segreti inglesi e americani e la perpetua tentazione del demone della politica, con il fallimento della trasformazione del Movimento di Comunità in un partito tradizionale; l'identità dell'industriale che intuisce le nuove frontiere tecnologiche (l'elettronica) e che unifica il sapere umanistico e la cultura tecnomanifatturiera, senza però riuscire a superare i limiti del capitalismo famigliare. Sotto, come una radiazione di fondo, "quella strana joie de vivre che caratterizza la vita di Adriano e di quanti saranno con lui e intorno a lui".

In the journal articles, historiographical essays, and numerous references to the political thought of Adriano Olivetti, the term constantly used to characterize his thinking is ‘utopia’. It is from this word, or rather, the misuse of this word, where one can begin to shed light on Olivettian political thinking. The term ‘utopia’, which has come to designate an entire vein of political literature, has also entered into common usage to define an impossible project, a wide-eyed dream; and a ‘utopian’ is that individual who longs for abstract projects instead of concrete ideas. It would be unproductive to resort to the diverse arguments of Firpo, of Mannheim, or of Bloch, of the philosophers of the Frankfurt School or others, since, as Giovanni Sartori has observed, after the word ceases to exist – where utopia is understood to mean impossibility – the impossibilities still remain. So, precisely because the literature on the political thought of Olivetti appears to suffer greatly from ‘empirical’ influences, it seems necessary to confront the complexities of his presumed utopianism with a methodological approach. This book investigates the inherent ‘impossibilities’, if they indeed exist, in the political thought of Olivetti. It also seeks to understand, as a result, if the Olivettian ideal is lacking in any true consistency, since it is secluded from an adequate analysis of historical reality, or if it is, rather, an idealism which does not lose sight of reality, in an attempt to overturn it as the basis for a plausible global vision. This book will be of interests to students and scholars in history, political economy and philosophy.
