Lev Shestov And His Times written by Andrius Valevičius and has been published by New York : P. Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Literary Collections categories.

Lev Shestov (1866-1938) has been acclaimed as the most original twentieth-century Russian philosopher. Living in Paris after the Russian Revolution, Shestov caught the attention of French intellectuals (such as A. Gide, G. Marcel, E. Mounier and later A. Camus) with his penetrating portrayals of existentialists in France. This book examines Shestov's interpretations of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Nietzsche, Chekhov, Ibsen and his confrontation with the philosopher Edmund Husserl, whom Shestov first introduced to philosophical circles. This book also takes into consideration a wealth of Russian language literature on Shestov.

This study spans the entire life and work of the Russian philosopher Lev Shestov (1866-1938). It offers keys to understanding his thought, while also tracing the historical itinerary of his work. Shestov’s thought is not only interesting in itself, as a “philosophy fighting against philosophy,” but also because it reveals an entire world of cultural connections in its extraordinarily keen exploration of other “souls.” The reader will find in Shestov some of the sharpest analyses of authors such as Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Tolstoi, Dostoevskii, Luther, Plotinus, Pascal, Kierkegaard and many others. This study will better determine the controversial and fascinating philosopher’s place in the history of Russian and Western thought.

"Leon Shestov was a Russian-Jewish intellectual of the Silver Age of Russian culture who believed in the irrational, the divine, the overwhelming insight. As a philosopher, he stood firmly against the encroachment of rationalism and science. As a literary critic, he was unique in his quest for the experience behind artistic creation. In this book Shestov offers brilliant, witty insights into Chekhov, Dostoevski, Ibsen, Tolstoi, Hegel, Kant, Nietzsche, and many other writers and philosophers.

Lev Shestov written by Michael Finkenthal and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Existentialism categories.

In Lev Shestov: Existential Philosopher and Religious Thinker, Michael Finkenthal explores the evolution of Lev Shestov's philosophical and religious intellectual contributions. The hermeneutical effort is mainly based on the Shestovian oeuvre, but his thought is considered in light of existential philosophies in their evolution from Pascal, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard to those of the twentieth century. Shestov's «deconstruction» of philosophy is discussed parallel to the analysis of the formation of his religious thought and its relevancy in the context of efforts by Buber, Rosenzweig, and Levinas to redefine Judaism.

The Christianization Of Pyrrhonism written by J.R. Maia Neto and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Philosophy categories.

Augustine's christianization of Plato and Thomas Aquinas's of Aristotle provided the two main foundations of medieval Judeo- Christian philosophy. In The Christianization of Pyrrhonism, José R. Maia Neto shows that Greek scepticism played a similar role in the development of a major strand of modern religious thought. From the Jansenist reaction of Molinism in the early 17th century to Shestov's resistance to the arrival of Kantian enlightenment in Russia in the late 19th century, Greek scepticism was reconstructed in terms of Christian doctrines and used against major secular philosophers who posed threats to religion. At the same time, the ancient sceptics' practical stance was attacked in order that it does not constitute a viable alternative to the modern secular philosophies. The resulting Christianized Pyrrhonism would be the basis for a genuine Christian or Biblical thought, for the first time emancipated from the rationalist assumptions and methods of Greek philosophy. The Christianization of Pyrrhonism is extremely valuable for those interested in the modern developments of ancient scepticism, in the relations between religious and philosophical ideas in modernity, and for scholars and the general public interested in Pascal, Kierkegaard and Shestov.
