Tutti hanno un cognome: oggi è un fatto così scontato che lo si potrebbe quasi considerare naturale. In realtà si tratta dell'esito di una lunga storia. Nel corso del tempo gli Italiani si sono chiamati fra loro in tanti modi, e quello che noi chiamiamo cognome si è sviluppato molto lentamente, come risultato dell'interazione di vari fattori: la coscienza di sé degli individui e delle famiglie (a cominciare da quelle nobili), la necessità di distinguersi e riconoscersi all'interno delle comunità di appartenenza, la spinta proveniente dalla Chiesa e dagli Stati verso la regolamentazione dell'identità onomastica di ognuno. La nascita dei cognomi non è stata perciò un evento puntuale e irreversibile, ma un processo segnato da contraddizioni, deviazioni, passi indietro e anche notevoli differenze fra una parte d'Italia e l'altra. È un tema appassionante che intreccia le grandi questioni storiche, quali la persistenza della tradizione romana nell'Alto Medioevo, la formazione delle signorie territoriali, l'impatto del concilio di Trento, l'azione di governo delle burocrazie dell'assolutismo illuminato, con quelle a noi più vicine, come il nazionalismo linguistico, le persecuzioni, le migrazioni del Novecento e oggi la questione ancora aperta del diritto di trasmettere il cognome materno. È una storia non del tutto finita e che non finirà mai.
