Cette recherche s'inscrit dans une problématique générale posée par P. MARTY (1976), dans le cadre de la psychosomatique. L'auteur pose une relation étroite entre ce qui se passe au niveau du fonctionnement mental de l'individu et la tenue du corps .Cette problématique a été discutée par l'auteur en ce qui concerne plusieurs maladies somatiques. A partir de nos propres observations sur des enfants en difficultés scolaires, nous avons remarqué la pertinence de cette problématique, pour comprendre l'intrication des problèmes scolaires. Pour considérer l'impact des facteurs explicatifs habituels de l'échec scolaire, tels que le niveau socio-économique des parents, leur niveau culturel, leur état de santé etc., sur les réactions individuelles de l'enfant; il a fallu s'intéresser en mème temps à la qualité de la mentalisation chez l'enfant et à l'état de santé de celui-ci. L'examen psychologique d'une trentaine d'enfants à l'aide de la démarche clinique a permit de montrer le lien qui existe entre les capacités de gestion des excitations liées aux conflits chez les enfants en difficultés et les moyens défensifs qu'ils mettent en avant pour faire face.
