Traces the history of the Jewish Italian organization Delegazione Assistenza Emigranti Ebrei (DELASEM), which was founded in Genova with the permission of the fascist government and was active between 1939-47. It was financed by Jewish international organizations, and was aided by the Catholic Church and the Italian Resistance movement. Between 1939-43, DELASEM assisted Jewish refugees who, from 1938, because of the Racial Laws, lost their residence rights, and from 1941 were interned in refugee camps. In 1942 the "DELASEM dei Piccoli" was created in order to help children. In 1943 DELASEM was divided into two branches: one in Rome, in liberated Italy, and the other in Genova, working clandestinely under the Nazi occupation und under the Repubblica Sociale Italiana. During this stage, DELASEM extended its help to all Jews, including Italians. After the war, until 1947, DELASEM helped in reunifying Jewish families and in emigration to Palestine.

The different contributions of this body of work attemp to demonstrate that the concept of diaspora (exile) has acquired a renewed currency among scholars by examining that to be in exile, at least in some way, is to live a disjoint life. Thus, to live in exileor diaspora implies to take up the difficult task of kee-ping one`s dignity and one ́s story, despite the on slaught of a colonial power. The relationship with a past, often through stories of the mother/land or through remembrance and (re)creation, becomes a means of survival. Futhermore, the sense (or absence) of community, and the positioning in language generate an ever more complex and dialogic definition of Canadian and American nationalities and identities.
