“L’ultima spiaggia” è un romanzo fantastorico, fantascientifico e distopico. Le vicende narrate si svolgono nell’arco di sette anni, dal 2053 al 2059, con riferimenti ai decenni immediatamente precedenti. Si è nel pieno di uno scontro di civiltà tra il mondo occidentale e una nuova entità politica che mira a ricostituire l’antico impero persiano. L’evento cruciale che dà il via alla narrazione è lo scoppio di alcune bombe nucleari che colpiscono il mondo occidentale: dagli Stati Uniti, all’Europa, alla Russia, a Israele. Il bombardamento colpisce anche l’Italia, soprattutto la costa tirrenica, fino alla Sicilia. Per ritorsione, si ha un bombardamento nucleare che colpisce l’avversario. Ne emerge un mondo sconvolto, dove la povera umanità derelitta deve trascinarsi tra le sofferenze e i lutti subiti, le conseguenze imprevedibili sulla propria salute e sull’ambiente, la necessità impellente di sopravvivere davanti a un futuro fosco e incerto. L’umanità si divide in due grandi blocchi: i potenti (gli Eletti) che vorrebbero accaparrarsi le ultime terre incontaminate nell’emisfero australe (l’ultima spiaggia), e i Superflui, tutta quella massa di diseredati che dovrebbero sparire perché le risorse sono ormai molto limitate, oppure, nella migliore della ipotesi, essere utilizzati come schiavi. Chi può organizzare la eliminazione di questa umanità “inutile” è una Cupola che raccoglie tutti i super potenti. I Superflui, da parte loro, si organizzano in una rete di formazioni resistenti, che cercano di opporsi al criminale progetto della Cupola. L’arma decisiva che porrebbe fine alla massa dei Superflui è la WPR, una terribile bomba che ridurrebbe tutto allo stato di polvere. Essa è contenuta in un laboratorio segreto e per farla esplodere è necessario risolvere una serie di quiz. Solo una mente geniale potrebbe riuscirci. Ma i dati sono tutti contenuti in un dispositivo che può capitare o nelle mani degli Eletti o in quella dei Superflui. In questo clima generale e in varie parti del mondo, dall’Italia all’Africa, dalla Palestina agli Stati Uniti, dalla Grecia alla Mongolia si delineano le storie di diversi personaggi, con i loro drammi, le loro fragilità, le loro genialità, i loro ideali e le loro meschinità, i loro odi tenaci e i loro appassionati amori. E queste storie finiscono tutte per collegarsi e per intrecciarsi insieme, in una sorta di grande dramma che giunge sino all’enigma finale: una volta trovata la soluzione per fare esplodere o disattivare la bomba, vale la pena o no salvare l’umanità? Il romanzo è lungo (infatti si suddivide in tre tomi, costituendo una trilogia) e anche complesso, perché vi si ritrovano vari filoni: quello socio-economico, quello interculturale, quello etico, quello esistenziale-affettivo, quello spirituale, tutti condensati nelle vicende che riguardano storie concrete di esseri umani, con i loro sentimenti e i loro ideali, ma anche con i loro egoismi e le loro volontà di dominio e di sopraffazione. In definitiva, nel corso della narrazione si delinea l’eterna, ciclopica lotta tra il Male e il Bene, inquadrata nel mondo di un possibile futuro prossimo. In essa si intrecciano conoscenze, esperienze, meditazioni, desideri, ideali e fantasie che hanno dato vita e sostanza all’immaginario dell’autrice.
