La trama del racconto si dipana tra il 1100 e il 1200, quando la classe mercantile, la borghesia, cominciava a prendere coscienza della propria importanza e i comuni iniziavano a governare le città della Longobardia. Si era avviata una rivoluzione straordinaria, il potere non discendeva dal cielo ma erano gli uomini a conferirlo ad altri uomini, tutto questo però si scontrava con i progetti dell’imperatore Federico Primo di Hohenstaufen, il Barbarossa che invece era fermamente deciso ad imporre l’autorità imperiale. Redeo Crivelli apparteneva ad una ricca e aristocratica casata di valvassori di Magenta ed era un giovane rivoluzionario ante litteram. Non credeva che i gatti, specialmente quelli neri, fossero un tramite con l’occulto e andassero bruciati e crocefissi e non credeva neppure che l’autorità imperiale scendesse dal cielo. Redeo era convinto che spettasse al popolo scegliere da chi farsi governare e per le sue convinzioni si scontrò con il Barbarossa e con l’inquisitore papale padre Lividus. L’umiliazione di Redeo Crivelli è una fantasiosa rielaborazione di vicende storiche. Gli eventi e i personaggi storici sono tutti reali, mentre Redeo e tutti i personaggi che gli ruotano attorno sono stati inventati. La storia di Redeo Crivelli e della sua famiglia è un racconto di fantasia ambientato in un periodo storico in cui la gente si chiedeva quale fosse la fonte del potere.
