Negli ultimi anni il futuro dell’Unione economica e monetaria europea è stato spesso al centro di un dibattito tanto acceso quanto superficiale ed estemporaneo. Questo libro nasce dall’esigenza di riportare chiarezza in un momento in cui la situazione dei paesi europei appare particolarmente complicata e attraversata da profondi cambiamenti. Per far fronte alla permacrisi in cui il mondo vive a partire dallo scoppio della grande crisi finanziaria del 2008, le banche centrali si sono spinte «oltre le Colonne d’Ercole», abbassando i tassi fi n sottozero e comprando grandi quantità di titoli di Stato. Con il suo racconto Bruni prima ci aiuta a ricostruire la grave crisi dell’Eurozona nello scorso decennio, dalla Grecia all’Irlanda, dal Portogallo alla Spagna, fi no ovviamente all’Italia e quindi a Cipro. Lo sguardo si concentra poi sul periodo 2014-19 con le sue tensioni commerciali e politiche, una bassa inflazione e poca crescita. Sono gli anni in cui le banche centrali si spingono a solcare acque ignote, fuori dall’ortodossia e senza regole, con politiche ultraespansive basate soprattutto sul Quantitative Easing, che la FED attua dal 2009 al 2014 e la BCE nel quinquennio successivo. E quando le due banche centrali cominciano a frenare l’espansione ecco l’arrivo del cigno nero della pandemia, che le induce a tornare a intensificare quella politica monetaria. Accesa anche dalla guerra ucraina, con l’aumento dei prezzi dell’energia, arriva quindi l’inflazione – stranamente inattesa, forse troppo ricercata per più di un decennio, riconosciuta e affrontata con ritardo, violenza e qualche controversia. Se oggi i banchieri centrali vogliono tornare credibili difensori della stabilità monetaria devono convincerci che un così lungo periodo di sregolatezza non si ripeterà più.
