Schizofrenia, Alzheimer, autismo, epilessia, sindrome di Cotard sono solo esempi di modi di esistere in cui l’assioma cartesiano del «cogito ergo sum» è sovvertito dal «penso, dunque non sono». Le neuroscienze da tempo si interrogano su questi stati: condizioni cerebrali difettose o disfunzionali, dove accade che il Sé migri dal proprio corpo fisico verso un proprio doppione separato (Doppelgänger), o che lasci il proprio corpo vagare sul soffitto restando a guardarlo a distanza, come fosse distinto e altro da sé stesso. L’uomo che non c’era parte da qui: dagli interrogativi a cui epistemologie differenti non hanno ancora saputo rispondere definitivamente, rimandandoci alla certezza che mente e corpo intrecciano tra loro relazioni complesse e mutanti, che i processi neuronali aggiornano il nostro Sé continuamente, e che la percezione di continuità che abbiamo del nostro essere noi stessi potrebbe di per sé essere un’illusione. Perché il Sé è allo stesso tempo ovunque, eppure da nessuna parte, nel nostro cervello.

Themes, places, characters and voices of Elizabeth Jolley’s Mr Scobie’s Riddle are explored in detail in this monograph, which provides different narratological and translational analyses of the novel, as well as an academic translation into Italian. Considering the challenges and issues posited by a literary work’s translation helps to shed light on the original work itself. In this manner, the translation is to be seen as a further analytical instrument to gain insight into the original novel. The purpose of this work is to obtain a deeper understanding of the complicated microcosm created by Jolley in the nursing home of “St Christopher and St Jude”: the typically Australian themes of migration, isolation, place and displacement; the Australian culture-specific elements; the ensemble of curious characters and their entertaining voices.
