Els capítols d’aquest volum de la Història Agrària dels Països Catalans dels segles moderns se centren tant en l’observació de les continuïtats com en la identificació dels canvis. S’hi examinen les conjuntures seculars, les transformacions dels conreus i de les tècniques (amb atenció especial a la vinya i el vi) i les estructures socials. Els autors distingeixen tres conjuntures en el transcurs dels segles XVI al XVIII. A finals del XV i inicis del XVI s’identifica un moviment expansiu en termes demogràfics i productius que es prolonga fins al final de la dècada del 1580. Els guanys vegetatius de la població, encavalcats amb l’ajut decisiu de la immigració, col·laboren en la reconstrucció de es bases agràries d’una producció en què la rotació biennal i els cereals són arreu encara hegemònics i les novetats socials i productives escasses. El període 1580-1680 és reconegut com una fase històrica ambivalent en què la crisi es combina amb les transformacions. Els canvis en les estructures socials precediren les novetats agràries i les diferències entre els territoris catalans rauen en bona part en el distint paper que la noblesa o els sectors urbans tenen en les relacions socials agràries, en les quals la pagesia tendeix a erosionar la renda feudal. Arreu, però, l’endeutament per raons privades o fiscals engendra diferenciació social. El segle XVIII es veu com el segle de l’expansió i la formació del mercat, però també com la culminació i final d’un model de creixement. A Catalunya permeté la formació de xarxes protoindustrials i al País Valencià la formació d’una agricultura intensiva totalment comercialitzada.

Aquest treball tracta sobre el moviment agronòmic a Catalunya durant el període de la Il·lustració. De l'estudi de les fonts consultades es posa de manifest l'existència d'un discurs que tenia com a eixos la potenciació i la modernització de l'agricultura. A partir d'aquesta constatació s'ha bastit una hipòtesi de treball que pretén demostrar que el moviment agronòmic català de la Il·lustració, tot i posseir uns trets específics que el dotaven de personalitat pròpia, va seguir, tant des del punt de vista institucional, humà, com de propostes tecnològiques, les directrius del seu homòleg europeu. El treball es divideix en tres parts. Després d'una primera part en la que s'estudien els precedents agronòmics del punt d'inici de la recerca es dedica una segona part en la que s'aborden les qüestions centrals de la recerca: la institucionalització de l'agronomia a la Catalunya il·lustrada. La tercera part analitza i exposa les propostes tècniques i metodològiques que les institucions i els agrònoms estudiats van propugnar. La novetat d'aquest treball estriba en posar de relleu l'existència d'un moviment de naturalesa científico-tècnica que es va produir paral·lelament a les transformacions del camp català del XVIII. Un moviment que, sense ser una especificitat pròpia de la societat catalana del moment, va representar tot un estat d'opinió i un desig de transformació des dels pressupostos de la renovació científica i tècnica. Temes com l'ensenyament de l'agricultura, la invenció de noves màquines agrícoles, els nous mètodes de conreu o la lluita fitosanitària són algunes de les matèries que el lector trobarà en les pàgines d'aquest llibre.

El llibre "Evolució del treball de la terra a Catalunya", de Rogeli Montalà Magriñà, és una treball que desenvolupa la implantació i desenvolupament dels conreus, les eines i instruments agrícoles i les pràctiques camperoles, en un àmbit territorial que abraça el país i en una època que inclou els segles xix i xx, de manera que les seves conclusions són prou sòlides i suficients per poder establir categories i esdevenir referent de posteriors estudis i anàlisis. S'expliquen diversos processos dels treballs del camp, amb les corresponents imatges de les eines utilitzades. Per dur a terme aquesta tasca, s'han aprofitat part de les eines exposades al Museu de Carros i Eines del Camp i altres de tretes de fotografies cedides, segons es detalla en cadascuna. Aquest Museu es va fer realitat quan Rogeli Montalà, l'autor d'aquest llibre, es va jubilar. Va recórrer diversos pobles de Catalunya i Aragó, d'on recollí peces directament dels pagesos i rebé, posteriorment, moltes aportacions desinteressades de particulars i cooperatives agrícoles. Actualment, consta d'unes 5.000 peces, el 30% de les quals ja estan catalogades per la delegació del Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat a Tarragona. Cal destacar que pràcticament totes les peces són anteriors al treball mecanitzat i tenen una antiguitat d'entre 50 i 200 anys. Aquest llibre s'ha pogut dur a terme gràcies als coneixements personals de l'autor, fill de pagesos, però també gràcies a les consultes bibliogràfiques i gràcies també a les entrevistes realitzades a persones que havien dut a terme les feines agrícoles que s'expliquen.
