Geopolitics Culture And The Scientific Imaginary In Latin America written by María del Pilar Blanco and has been published by University Press of Florida this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-28 with Social Science categories.

Highlighting the relationship among science, politics, and culture in Latin American history Challenging the common view that Latin America has lagged behind Europe and North America in the global history of science, this volume reveals that the region has long been a center for scientific innovation and imagination. It highlights the important relationship among science, politics, and culture in Latin American history. Scholars from a variety of fields including literature, sociology, and geography bring to light many of the cultural exchanges that have produced and spread scientific knowledge from the early colonial period to the present day. Among many topics, these essays describe ideas on health and anatomy in a medical text from sixteenth-century Mexico, how fossil discoveries in Patagonia inspired new interpretations of the South American landscape, and how Argentinian physicist Rolando García influenced climate change research and the field of epistemology. Through its interdisciplinary approach, Geopolitics, Culture, and the Scientific Imaginary in Latin America shows that such scientific advancements fueled a series of visionary utopian projects throughout the region, as countries grappling with the legacy of colonialism sought to modernize and to build national and regional identities.

History Of Psychology In Latin America written by Julio César Ossa and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-01 with Psychology categories.

This book presents a cultural history of psychology that analyzes the diverse contexts in which psychological knowledge and practices have developed in Latin America. The book aims to contribute to the growing effort to develop a theoretical knowledge that complements the biographical perspective centered on the great figures, with a polycentric history that emphasizes the different cultural, social, economic and political phenomena that accompanied the emergence of psychology. The different chapters of this volume show the production of historians of psychology in Latin America who are part of the Ibero-American Network of Researchers in History of Psychology (RIPeHP, in the Portuguese acronym for "Rede Iberoamericana de Pesquisadores em História da Psicologia"). They present a significant sample of the research carried out in a field that has experienced a strong development in the region in the last decades. The volume is divided into two parts. The first presents comparative chapters that address cross-cutting issues in the different countries of the region. The second part analyzes particular aspects of the development of psychology in seven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru. Throughout these chapters the reader will find how psychology made its way through dictatorial governments, phenomena of violence and internal armed conflict, among others. Dimensions that include rigorous analysis ranging from ancestral practices to current geopolitical knowledge of the Latin American region. History of Psychology in Latin America - A Cultural Approach is an invaluable resource for historians of psychology, anywhere in the world, interested in a polycentric and critical approach. Since its content is part of the "cultural turn in psychology" it is also of interest to readers interested in the social and human sciences in general. Finally, the thoroughly international perspective provided through its chapters make the book a key resource for both undergraduate and graduate teaching and education on the past and current state of psychology.

This series acknowledges the substantial gap that still exists inpsychiatry between research evidence and clinical practice:clinicians are sometimes incompletely aware of research findings,or regard them as biased, not convincing or not relevant to theirpractice. By using systematic reviews with accompanyingcommentaries this volume is able to assess the "evidence" and"experiences" to give a critical and objective account of therelevant issues, while focusing on key topics. This comprehensivebook addresses schizophrenia through a systematic review of theavailable rearch evidence. This book "...was a pleasure to review. One can dip in and outof it at random to find an important aspect of schizophreniasummarised in a few paragraphs. The reviews are all well written, balanced and up-to-date. It is designed for an internationalreadership, and come commentaries, such as those on continentalconcepts of schizophrenia, or experience of stigma in the lessindustrialised world, are rarely found together in one volume."—British Journal of Psychiatry, 2001
