La sfârşitul anilor '90, pornind de la jurnalul său ţinut încă din adolescenţă, Monica Lovinescu a reconstituit o întreagă lume: lumea secolului care tocmai se încheia. S-a născut astfel un volum de memorii cum nu sunt multe în literatura română, un volum care restituie mulţimea chipurilor acestei lumi, mai senine sau mai frământate - Bucureştii copilăriei şi tinereţii, instaurarea comunismului în România, exilul parizian şi apoi colaborarea la postul de radio Europa Liberă. Tabloul zugrăvit de autoare se alcătuieşte deopotrivă din portrete şi din atmosfera care le înconjoară, din întâmplări şi din semnificaţiile pe care le dezvăluie. Mai presus de toate însă, amintirea este străjuită de o înaltă conştiinţă morală, aceeaşi care a ţinut trează, în sufletele ascultătorilor săi „pe unde scurte“, deopotrivă speranţa că normalitatea este cu putinţă şi ideea că ea nu poate fi decât rodul unei necurmate lupte. Este şi legatul cel mai însemnat pe care La apa Vavilonului ni-l transmite nouă, celor de azi.

This is the first comparative study of literature written by writers who fled from East-Central Europe during the twentieth century. It includes not only interpretations of individual lives and literary works, but also studies of the most important literary journals, publishers, radio programs, and other aspects of exile literary cultures. The theoretical part of introduction distinguishes between exiles, émigrés, and expatriates, while the historical part surveys the pre-twentieth-century exile traditions and provides an overview of the exilic events between 1919 and 1995; one section is devoted to exile cultures in Paris, London, and New York, as well as in Moscow, Madrid, Toronto, Buenos Aires and other cities. The studies focus on the factional divisions within each national exile culture and on the relationship between the various exiled national cultures among each other. They also investigate the relation of each exile national culture to the culture of its host country. Individual essays are devoted to Witold Gombrowicz, Paul Goma, Milan Kundera, Monica Lovincescu, Milos Crnjanski, Herta Müller, and to the "internal exile" of Imre Kertész. Special attention is devoted to the new forms of exile that emerged during the ex-Yugoslav wars, and to the problems of "homecoming" of exiled texts and writers.

This book explores an aspect of the complex cultural history of 20th-century exile: the influences of transnational experiences on the views of emigrants and exiles concerning their own academic, scientific and intellectual cultures. These essays focus on the reflections of people who left their countries during the period of 1933–1945. Many of them reconsidered their own past in the old country and compared it with their actual experiences in the adopted homeland. The individual cases presented here share a similar theoretical framework. The book is divided into two sections: the first one focuses on the German and Spanish lost project, and the second one deals with the East European projects – focused on Polish and Rumanian examples above all. From the perspective of transnational history, Merel Leeman analyzes the cases of two special exiles: George Mosse and Peter Gay. Spaniards’ American projects is the main topic of Carolina Rodríguez-López’s analysis of Spanish scholars in the US. Natacha Bolufer focuses on associations and newspapers like Liberación which paid special attention to Spanish leftists suffering from Franco’s political measures. José M. Faraldo looks at the cases of refugees from Eastern European countries – mainly from Romania and Poland – who escaped to Spain after the fall of the axis in 1945. Mihaela Albu describes the diversity and plurality of Romanian exiles in the Western world, in diverse countries of Europe and also in the US. This book aims to encourage the dialogue and comparison among diverse exiles.

După ’89, odată cu spulberarea interdicțiilor (parțiale sau totale), într-o lume agitată și neașezată, cum era România post-ceaușistă, aportul diasporenilor (prin literatura și revuistica exilului) a provocat „un fenomen neliniștitor”. După „abuzuri de uitare” și manipularea memoriei, trecutul se rescria, iscând rocade și seisme ierarhice. Pretenția că „doar înlăuntrul granițelor RPR”, cum se pronunțase T. Vianu, se năștea literatura română, s-a văzut grabnic infirmată. Și, în replică, un alt exclusivism își făcea loc, doar cei din afară reprezentând, chipurile, literatura română, fluturând, într-o zonă „deșertificată”, „liste rele” și culpabilizări în trombă, puțin interesați de descifrarea corectă a contextelor. Necesara perspectivă unică părea suspendată. Dar, negreșit, o literatură a exilului românesc există și recuperarea ei se cuvine întreprinsă în numele efortului întregitor. Dacă Mircea Eliade, ca neobosit animator, își dorea, prin 1953, o Bibliotecă a Pribegiei, mândru de activitatea culturală a românilor din exil, salvând – ca prezență spirituală – patria însângerată, astăzi recuperarea exilului cultural românesc, a acelei țări „de dincolo”, „ar fi trebuit să devină o necesitate de absolută urgență”. Dar o strategie asumată instituțional lipsește, din păcate. Să se adeverească oare spusele lui N.I. Herescu, aproape convins că „operele pribegilor au și ele, îndeobște, un destin pribeag”? Reunim în acest prim volum câteva figuri majore ale exilului cultural românesc, în exclusivitate din spațiul francez. / Adrian Dinu Rachieru
