La popularidad de las comedias de Lope de Vega se basa, a mi entender, no sólo en la profusión con la que el autor las creó, sino en la maestría temática y lírica de las mismas. En lo que respecta a "La Arcadia" (y otras similares), es importante destacar que Lope supo hacer uso de sus relaciones cortesanas para crear una obra que si bien es considerada de escaso valor intrínseco, proporciona interesantes datos para la recreación de algunos aspectos de la puesta en escena del teatro barroco así como del espacio utilizado para la representación. Por lo que respecta a su argumento la comedia narra (al igual que la novela del mismo nombre escrita hacia 1598) los amores desgraciados de los pastores Anfriso y Belisarda, y los enredos y trasgresiones causados por los celos que su amor provoca en otro de los personajes; el desarrollo de la trama, que suponía la intercesión de figuras mitológicas como Venus y Cupido, y la recreación de paisajes silvestres fantásticos en los que los personajes interactúan con los dioses, constituye una de las grandes creaciones de Lope quien utilizó como modelos a varios de los nobles con los que alternó durante su estancia en Alba de Tormes. Por otro lado, su introducción de la figura del "rústico", el uso de cantos y danzas como preparación al cambio de escenas, así como el profundo carácter musical de la versificación han llevado a considerar ésta y otras comedias mitológico-cortesanas de Lope como verdaderos libretos de ópera.
