È l'autunno del 1867 e, mentre cresce il timore e la concitazione per l'imminente invasione dello Stato Pontificio da parte delle truppe garibaldine, sulla strada per Cori il piccolo Ignazio Tommasi viene rapito dal brigante Cesare Panici, capo di una delle bande più efferate che infestano lo Stato Pontificio nei suoi ultimi anni. Chi erano i briganti pontifici che terrorizzavano le province di Marittima e Campagna? Quali erano le loro abitudini, i loro costumi? Attraverso le lettere tra familiari e briganti e i rapporti delle diverse gendarmerie, si sono potuti ricostruire le gesta della banda Panici, attiva dal 1866 al 1868. La corrispondenza che accompagnò i giorni del terribile rapimento è talmente viva e puntuale che ci permette di ripercorrere la tragica vicenda giorno per giorno. È un affresco familiare e allo stesso tempo la testimonianza di uno Stato alla fine della sua esistenza millenaria. ADRIANO SCONOCCHIA si è laureato in Lettere presso l'Università di Roma "La Sapienza" con un corso di studi in Storia moderna e contemporanea. Si è occupato dei rapporti tra Roma e Venezia durante l'interdetto papale, prima di dedicarsi allo studio degli aspetti sociali nell'ambito della storia dello Stato Pontificio nel secondo ottocento. Nel 2002 ha collaborato alla mostra documentaria Giustizia e criminalità a Cori in età moderna. È autore di testi teatrali.

Marco Giuliani, romano, laureato in Lettere con indirizzo umanistico a La Sapienza di Roma, approfondisce i suoi studi ‘post-lauream’ dedicandosi a temi come sociologia e politica del Risorgimento italiano. Nel 2011 esce una sua silloge di poesie dal titolo “Alcuni ritratti” (Montedit) e, a seguito dell’assegnazione di una borsa di studio al merito da parte dell’Università degli Studi di Roma Tre, nel 2016, presso il Master Internazionale di II livello in Scienze e Cultura delle Religioni, presenta una ricerca dal titolo “L’Unità d’Italia e la prima fase della laicizzazione dell’istruzione, l’analfabetismo come problema politico e sociologico”. Autore di numerosi articoli e pubblicazioni di carattere scientifico, ottiene il Premio Speciale Stampa al Premio “Orazio 2014” e la segnalazione speciale della giuria al Premio letterario “Teatro Aurelio 2014”. Attualmente, nel 2018, continua i suoi studi e le sue ricerche su alcuni temi poco approfonditi della storia patria contemporanea.

È il 22 ottobre 1867: a Roma scoppia l’insurrezione, mentre le provincie dello Stato Pontificio sono invase, già da un mese, dalle camicie rosse. È l’ultimo tentativo, infruttuoso, prima della presa di Porta Pia, per fare di Roma la capitale del Regno d’Italia. Il piano verrà attuato grazie alla determinazione del deputato bergamasco Francesco Cucchi, che organizzerà la rivolta con l’aiuto dei gruppi liberali romani. Il vecchio leone garibaldino, Francesco Crispi, riuscirà ad ottenere l’appoggio (clandestino) del governo Rattazzi. Ed ancora una volta, il sessantenne Garibaldi, fuggito dall’esilio di Caprera, compatterà il movimento e gli darà una guida, fino alla sconfitta di Mentana. Anche se fallì, l’insurrezione dell’autunno 1867 verrà ricordata per alcuni episodi drammatici passati alla storia: l’esplosione, in Borgo, della caserma "Serristori"; l’esecuzione capitale dei due responsabili Monti e Tognetti, l’ultima prima dell’annessione, che tanto scalpore ed indignazione provocò nell’Europa di allora; la strage del lanificio Ajani ed il sacrificio di Giuditta Tavani Arquati, come ancora oggi ricorda la targa commemorativa sul palazzo. Forse fu a causa di un’organizzazione non perfetta, per colpa di qualche tradimento e per l’illusione che il popolo romano fosse pronto per il grande salto verso l’Italia, che l’insurrezione fallì. Alcuni municipi della provincia resistettero più a lungo, come quello di Cori, che resse una settimana intera, fino alla sconfitta di Mentana. Gli avvenimenti vengono ripercorsi attraverso una meticolosa ricerca d’archivio che completa il quadro storico già noto.
