Según Miguel de Cervantes, Lepanto es “la más alta ocasión que vieron los siglos” y para la cristiandad en general, una victoria militar y, sobre todo, moral y de reputación, aunque con escasísimos resultados territoriales y geoestratégicos para los vencedores. Mientras que Lepanto es un leitmotiv para todos los participantes cristianos —el papado, los príncipes italianos, los Habsburgo españoles y los caballeros de las órdenes de Malta y de San Estéfano—, encontrar referencias a este hecho de armas es francamente difícil en la historiografía otomana. En estas páginas veremos la evolución de la marina otomana hasta llegar a los sucesos que acaecen en 1571, culminando con la conquista de la fortaleza tunecina de La Goleta en 1574. A través de este sugestivo relato, entenderemos las razones que obligan a un Estado —luego un Imperio— a transformarse en una potencia marítima. Lepanto supone el final de un proceso que desencadena una de las batallas navales más grandes de la historia, tanto por el número de embarcaciones enfrentadas como por los hombres que combaten y fallecen en las pocas horas de esta lucha a sangre y fuego. Miguel Ángel Bunes Ibarra es profesor de Investigación del Instituto de Historia (IH) del CSIC, especialista en la historia del Imperio Otomano en la época clásica y en los procesos de expansión de españoles y turcos por el Mediterráneo en los siglos XVI y XVII.
