Miroslav Krleža (1893-1981) è stato di certo il più grande letterato e intellettuale del Novecento croato. Saggista, critico, drammaturgo, poeta, scrittore, anticipatore di correnti e pensiero, è stato spesso censurato per il suo anti-militarismo e le sue critiche graffianti sia sotto l’Impero austro-ungarico che durante il Regno dei Serbi, dei Croati e degli Sloveni. Espulso dal Partito comunista jugoslavo nel 1939, avversato e scampato alla fucilazione del regime ustaša croato alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale, fu perdonato da Tito che lo volle alla guida della politica culturale del nuovo Stato federale socialista di Jugoslavia. Attraverso la sua vicenda umana e la sua incredibile produzione letteraria, Krleža si presenta come figlio e sentinella di un piccolo popolo, ma al contempo intellettuale mitteleuropeo tra i più innovativi e apprezzati. “Silvio Ziliotto ha costruito e scritto un ampio e ben articolato testo sulla storia e il valore del più importante (e straripante) autore della letteratura croata del XX secolo: Krleža il ribelle, il rivoluzionario, l’escluso, il salvato, l’intellettuale ufficiale, il sopravvissuto (a se stesso), il decano di Zagabria”. È il 1942 quando il cinquantenne Miroslav Krleža, il bardo della letteratura croata del XX secolo, si siede alla scrivania nella sua Zagabria dilaniata dalla seconda guerra mondiale per scrivere i ricordi d’infanzia nella sua città, il cui nome tedesco durante la dominazione austro-ungarica era Agram. Krleža stava vivendo allora il periodo più difficile della sua vita e nel tornare indietro a quand’era un bambino di dieci o undici anni cercava volutamente conforto nei ricordi d’infanzia e nel bene ricevuto dalla nonna materna. Ne scaturisce una prosa memorialistica sorprendente nella quale il linguaggio usato è ricco sia stilisticamente che di contenuti. Krleža riflette sulla religione, sulla Chiesa, sulla filosofia, sulla politica, sull’etica, sulla pittura, sull’arte, sulla natura della vita umana, procedendo per brevi immagini e osservazioni per di più legate alle riflessioni interiori.
