Italy 1636 is one of the most closely-researched and detailed books on the operation of early modern armies anywhere, and is explicitly inspired by neo-Darwinian thinking. Taking the French and Savoyard invasion of Spanish Lombardy in 1636 as its specific example, it begins with the recruitment of the soldiers, the care and feeding of the armies and their horses, the impact of the invasion on civilians in the path of their advance, and the manner in which generals conducted their campaign in response to the information at their disposal. The next section describes the unfolding of the long and stubborn battle of Tornavento, where Spanish, German, and Italian soldiers stormed the French in their entrenchments, detailing the tactics of both the infantry and the cavalry, and re-evaluating the effectiveness of Spanish methods in the 1630s. The account focuses on the motivations of soldiers to fight, and how they reacted to the stress of combat. Gregory Hanlon arrives at surprising conclusions on the conditions under which they were ready to kill their adversaries, and when they were content to intimidate them into retiring. The volume concludes by examining the penchant for looting of the soldiery in the aftermath of battle, the methods of treating wounded soldiers in the Milan hospital, the horrific consequences of hygienic breakdown in the French camp, and the strategic failure of the invasion in the aftermath of battle. This in turn underscores the surprising resilience of Spanish policies and Spanish arms in Europe. In describing with painstaking detail the invasion of 1636, Hanlon explores the universal features of human behaviour and psychology as they relate to violence and war.

Considerando gli antefatti e le appendici in realtà la guerra dei 30 anni occupa tutta la prima metà del XVII secolo. Lo studio si sviluppa su due volumi separati. Il primo si occupa degli antefatti per giungere fino alla battaglia di Lutzen (1632) e morte di Gustavo Adolfo. Il secondo conclude fino alla pace di Westfalia del 1648 e successive appendici. Distribuito su ben 12 capitoli all’interno di questo poderoso lavoro trovano spazio ben 53 tavole a colori relative alle mappe, alle cartine assai particolareggiate di battaglie accompagnate da ricca descrizione e a 35 tavole dedicate alle armi, alle bandiere e alle uniformi in uso nel conflitto. A queste vanno aggiunte quasi 500 rare ed interessanti illustrazioni inserite nel testo, spesso ricavate da stampe coeve che completano il patrimonio iconografico dell’intero lavoro. Ed ancora diverse suggestive tavole cronologiche del periodo trattato in merito ai principali accadimenti politici militari ma anche relativi agli ambiti artistico e scientifico. schede approfondite sui personaggi importanti ed altre dedicate ai grandi artisti dell’epoca. Indici analitici assai ben definiti e completi per le personalità, i luoghi , la bibliografia ecc. il tutto in una elaborata e sofisticata impaginazione grafica. Questo e molto altro fanno parte del corredo di questo importante volume dedicato in sostanza alla prima metà del seicento, mezzo secolo della storia moderna dell’uomo. Il primo in assoluto mai scritto da un autore italiano e certamente fra i più completi finora realizzati sull’argomento in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.

Filippo Ghisolfi è un tipografo e calcografo milanese, la cui attività copre un arco temporale di 40 anni, dal 1629 al 1669. Fin dagli esordi la sua bottega svolge molti lavori su commissione. Ai suoi torchi ricorrono numerosi colleghi, compreso Giovanni Battista Bidelli. La produzione analizzata in questi annali è ampia: i titoli sono indicativi delle tendenze e dei gusti della società e possono fornire indizi per ricostruire il clima culturale del tempo. Libri di pregio si affiancano a prodotti correnti: ciò che conta è la disponibilità economica del committente. È un eccellente artigiano che, dietro pagamento, mette a disposizione capacità e strumenti propri. Una conferma della perizia tecnica è data dall’attività calcografica: è nella stampa delle incisioni che rivela le migliori capacità. Lo dimostrano le numerose dispute di tesi o conclusione, impegnativi manifesti di circa un metro, composti da due o tre lastre, in cui venivano articolati il testo e la parte figurativa.

News Networks in Early Modern Europe attempts to redraw the history of European news communication in the 16th and 17th centuries. News is defined partly by movement and circulation, yet histories of news have been written overwhelmingly within national contexts. This volume of essays explores the notion that early modern European news, in all its manifestations – manuscript, print, and oral – is fundamentally transnational. These 37 essays investigate the language, infrastructure, and circulation of news across Europe.
