Catrin Bone vive nel villaggio gallese di Cwmcysgod con la madre Mary, una donna spigolosa e solitaria. E solo dopo la scomparsa di Rosalind il paese si era accorto della sua esistenza, lei che era rimasta all’ombra di quella bellezza eccessiva, ingombrante, pericolosa. Ma Catrin, sedici anni quanti ne aveva Rosalind l’ultima volta che è stata vista, sente irresistibile il richiamo della foto di quella giovane donna che non ha mai conosciuto, e la guarda di nascosto ancora e ancora. Poi un giorno la ragazza soccorre una vagabonda, accasciata contro un muro. È in condizioni pietose, lurida e coperta di stracci, dice un’unica parola: «Fuoco». Nessuno la conosce. Peripezie umane e professionali in cui non mancano eroiche ascese in bicicletta, discese rompicollo sugli sci, fughe dalle fiamme e voli prometeici in compagnia di un fegato da trapiantare. Ma la sfida più dura è quella che vede Aldo in battaglia contro un nemico esterno, questa volta, incarnato in un medico in malafede, alle cui terapie viene sottoposta anche Margherita, l’unica donna che lui abbia amato davvero. Ma se un male reale guarisce lo zio Vittorio consentendogli di riconciliarsi col fratello perduto, per Aldo e Bruno, invece, la vita è una colluttazione quotidiana con la malattia, da cui non è mai concesso distogliere lo sguardo. Carlo Patriarca, medico che da sempre scrive romanzi, popola queste pagine di corpi che chiedono riparazione, di emozioni che chiedono riconoscimento, di figure che chiedono compassione e, sopra ogni cosa, salvezza.
