This collection of essays focuses on the ubiquity of the allegorical imagination in pre-modern western culture, and participates in a recent wave of resurgence of interest in the complex practices and ideas usually defined by the word "allegory". The contributors study the impact of the allegorical imagination on the production, reception and interpretation of literature, as well as its function as a tool of philosophical and theological enquiry, and its role in shaping the visual arts. Essays focus on subjects as varied as the general theories on allegory, allegory's relation to the human imagination, its usefulness or even inevitability as a human mode of cognition and its potential for the encoding of meanings that may be political, historical, religious and amorous. They discuss canonical figures such as Petrarch, Boccaccio, Boethius, Hans Memling, Pico della Mirandola, King James I and John Donne, but extend to include neglected but equally important figures such as Stephen Hawes or Thomas Usk as well as thematic approaches less concerned with issues of authority and authorship. As such the collection is a testimony to the variety, complexity, and adaptability of "allegory" at the heart of medieval western civilisation.

The transition from Latin to vernacular languages in the late Middle Ages and the dramatic rise of a new readership produced a huge bulk of translations, particularly of religious literature in its various genres. The solutions are so multifarious that they defy any attempt to outline general theories. This is particularly visible when the same text is translated or rewritten at different times and in different languages or genres. Through a minute analysis of texts this book aims at highlighting lexical, syntactic and stylistic choices dictated not only by the source but also by new readers and patrons, or by new destinations of the works. Established categories such as 'literalness' and 'fidelity' are thus questioned and integrated with these other factors which, while being more 'external', do nonetheless impinge on the very idea of 'translation', and consequently on its assessment. Far from being a mere transfer from one language to another, a medieval translation verges on a form of creative writing, and as such its study becomes a fascinating investigation into the very process of textual production.

Das gattungstypische Gerüst des Kommentars erfordert dabei zunächst Aussagen, die als Glosse, als Wort-, Vers- oder Stellenerklärung passagenweise progredieren. Die erfolgreichen Kommentatoren des 16. Jahrhunderts treffen aber darüber hinaus eigenständige Aussagen im Verbund mit dem Text eines anderen und präsentieren interferierende Texte: einerseits den Canzoniere Petrarcas (das Cinquecento stuft die Rime in den als zentral angesetzten Canzoniere und die minder wichtigen Trionfi) - und andererseits eine mit einer Vielzahl von Fragen befasste Auslegung des Lyrikbuchs. Ausgangspunkt sind stets textkritische Fragen; Handschriftenkunde und editorische Richtlinien verschränken sich freilich umgehend mit exegetischen und interpretatorischen Verfahren, so dass hier letztlich sowohl Gesamtdeutungen für Petrarcas Liebeslyrik als auch grundlegende Möglichkeiten im Umgang mit volkssprachlicher Lyrik und ihrem Autor erprobt werden. Die drei Kommentare ‐ die im vorliegenden Band in der Chronologie der Erstausgaben als Fallstudien behandelt werden (Vellutello: 1525; Gesualdo 1533; Daniello: 1541) ‐ sind im Selbstverständnis agonal. Anhand einer Zentralfigur rinascimentaler Literatur wird der Zugriff auf Text und Autor kritisch ausdifferenziert: Vellutello nutzt ein biographisch gegründetes Narrativ als Sinnmodell, Gesualdo operiert mit der Diskurs- und Wissensordnung, die seit der Antike als eloquentia et sapientia gefasst ist, Daniello reflektiert auf Sprache und Stil. Die maßgebliche lyrische Autorität Italiens gerät damit in ein komplexes Spannungsfeld; denn natürlich bekräftigen die schon im Erscheinungsbild beeindruckenden Kommentare den Geltungsanspruch des Lauradichters; in ihrer offen zur Schau gestellten Widerständigkeit gegeneinander betonen sie jedoch derartige Differenzen, dass dem Modell Kohärenz und Eindeutigkeit verloren zu gehen drohen.
