Dal Museo Tuscolano, centro nevralgico dell'esposizione, questo straordinario evento si snoda e si diffonde in diverse sedi della città, per accompagnarci nella scoperta dei luoghi storici della vita del Duca. Grazie all'impegno dell'Amministrazione Comunale e ai numerosi contributi di noti studiosi qui confluiti, è stato possibile realizzare un importante ed inedito primo passo verso l'approfondimento della vicenda umana del Cardinale e della sua attività in veste di Vescovo della Diocesi tuscolana. La figura di Enrico Stuart, protagonista dell'esposizione e di questo catalogo insieme alla biblioteca che volle donare alla comunità frascatana, fu per molto tempo trascurata nelle biografie ufficiali e nei saggi storici; considerato quale personaggio secondario in quel vasto e denso affresco storico incentrato sugli avvenimenti degli Stuart, gli fu sempre preferita la vicenda del fratello maggiore che tentò di restaurare la Casa Stuart sul trono d'Inghilterra e che, pur uscendone sconfitto, fu ricordato come eroe romantico. Nella possibilità di una fruibilità a più livelli, per specialisti o semplici appassionati, sta la straordinarietà di questa mostra, nella quale la nutrita documentazione si unisce a quella fascinazione estetica che solo la presenza dell'arte sa regalare. Ai curatori e alle istituzioni coinvolte va pertanto il merito di aver realizzato questo efficace connubio. Making Women's Medicine Masculine challenges the common belief that prior to the eighteenth century men were never involved in any aspect of women's healthcare in Europe. Using sources ranging from the writings of the famous twelfth-century female practitioner, Trota of Salerno, all the way to the great tomes of Renaissance male physicians, and covering both medicine and surgery, this study demonstrates that men slowly established more and more authority in diagnosing and prescribing treatments for women's gynaecological conditions (especially infertility) and even certain obstetrical conditions. Even if their 'hands-on' knowledge of women's bodies was limited by contemporary mores, men were able to establish their increasing authority in this and all branches of medicine due to their greater access to literacy and the knowledge contained in books, whether in Latin or the vernacular. As Monica Green shows, while works written in French, Dutch, English, and Italian were sometimes addressed to women, nevertheless even these were often re-appropriated by men, both by practitioners who treated women and by laymen interested to learn about the 'secrets' of generation. While early in the period women were considered to have authoritative knowledge on women's conditions (hence the widespread influence of the alleged authoress 'Trotula'), by the end of the period to be a woman was no longer an automatic qualification for either understanding or treating the conditions that most commonly afflicted the female sex - with implications of women's exclusion from production of knowledge on their own bodies extending to the present day.

After more than fifty years since the last publication, the cuneiform texts relating to the treatment of the loss of male sexual desire and vigor in Mesopotamia are collected in this volume. The aim of the book is to present Mesopotamian medical tradition regarding the so-called nīš libbi therapies. šà-zi-ga in Sumerian, nīš libbi in Akkadian, lit. "raising of the 'heart'", is the expression used to indicate a group of texts intended to recover the male sexual desire. This medical tradition is preserved from the Middle Babylonian period to the Achaemenid one. This broad range testifies to the importance of the transmission of this material throughout Mesopotamian history. The book provides the edition of this textual corpus and analyzes it in the light of new knowledge on ancient Near Eastern medicine. Moreover, this volume aims to show how theories and methodologies of Cultural Anthropology, Ethnopsychiatry and Gender Studies are useful for understanding the Mesopotamian medical system. This edition is an important tool for understanding Mesopotamian medical knowledge for Assyriologist, however since the texts have been translated and discussed using the anthropological and gender perspectives they are accessible also to scholars of other research fields, such as History of Medicine, Sexuality and Gender.
