Parmi les mouvements littéraires qui foisonnent à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, un seul semble être resté dans la marge de l’histoire littéraire : la bohème. Rite ou passage, la bohème cumule plusieurs fonctions pour finir par devenir un véritable art de vivre, qui pousse de jeunes littérateurs, gonflés d’illusions, vers les grandes capitales en quête de gloire et de reconnaissance. La littérature espagnole fin-de-siècle entre 1864 et 1920 s’est intéressée à ces combattants de l’idéal en rendant manifeste la difficulté ou l’absurdité de leur parcours. Conjuguant compassion, éloge, dérision, ironie, tragédie ou comédie, les romans, pièces de théâtre ou contes s’attachent à traiter ce type de bohème littéraire, de sa naissance à sa mort ou transfiguration. Cependant, loin de ne constituer qu’un phénomène de société ou qu’un fascinant sujet de fiction, les bohèmes espagnols développent leur propre art d’écrire, sans forcément parvenir à créer une littérature autonome des autres courants. Leurs écrits, la plupart inédits, témoignent d’une existence tourmentée, marquée par la misère et l’échec, finissant par imposer aux lecteurs une vision extravagante et désenchantée du statut de l’artiste dans une société espagnole de plus en plus industrialisée, déshumanisée. Leurs écrits peuvent se lire comme une longue définition de la bohème littéraire, un concept observé, nié, dénigré ou, au contraire, défendu, mais resté flou et insignifiant dans l’histoire littéraire. Cette définition à travers de grandes œuvres de la littérature hispanique ou d’écrits bohèmes ignorés ouvre la voie à la découverte de toute une lignée d’écrivains oubliés car rangés parmi « los vencidos ».
