"Mathieu Mercier a reçu le prix Marcel Duchamp en 2003. Par un juste retour des choses, il présente, aux éditions Anabet, une réinterprétation de la célèbre "Boîte-en-valise" de Duchamp. Pour Mathieu Mercier, cette malle, qui était conçue comme un musée portatif des principales oeuvres du maître, est "intéressante car elle possède une autonomie par rapport à tout le système de l'art. Elle est à la fois oeuvre et reproduction des oeuvres en modèle réduit. Elle manifeste un désir d'indépendance de Duchamp vis-à-vis de la galerie et du musée." Pour mener à bien son projet, Mercier a eu accès à tous les documents d'archives. La valise reste à l'échelle 1, mais elle a été simplifiée afin de peser moins lourd et de réduire son épaisseur. C'est ainsi que le pliant de voyage Underwood, qui était à l'origine en vinyle cousu, est ici reproduit en papier. De même, l'urinoir miniature en plâtre est désormais en mousse souple, et peut donc se rétracter. Présentée dans un premier temps dans une version numérotée et signée, la malle "pop up" est livrée avec une sangle et une patère conçues par Mercier. La patère se présente comme un hybride de deux oeuvres de Duchamp, le "Trébuchet" et le "Sèche-bouteilles". "L'édition signée permettra de financer l'édition non signée, qui sera diffusée dans un deuxième temps", espère l'artiste, qui avoue que ce projet "a coûté une fortune". Natacha Wolinski.
