È il decimo dei "Dialoghi" di Seneca, dedicato al suocero Pompeo Paolino, che aveva in quel momento l’importante incarico di prefetto dell’annona, cioè di raccolta e distribuzione del grano nell’Urbe. E proprio all’amico, oltre che parente, Seneca dà il consiglio di ritirarsi a vita privata, tralasciando ogni attività pubblica. Assumendo cioè un atteggiamento filosofico apparentemente epicureo, nonostante lo stesso Seneca fosse un esponente importante dello stoicismo romano. È in realtà una fase difficile, questa per Seneca, per un breve lasso di tempo fuori dai giochi politici, prima ancora di ritornare in auge grazie al nuovo imperatore Nerone. Il trattatello si basa su un paradosso. Non è la vita a essere breve, come invece comunemente si crede. Essa è lunga, purché la si sappia razionalmente impiegare. Però la vita non deve essere dedicata agli altri, ma al sapere e alla filosofia. L’approccio di Seneca in questo dialogo definisce un importante modello di vita spirituale per l’età classica: Seneca concepisce la filosofia come ricerca della virtù e pratica della libertà. On the Shortness of Life Seneca - On the Shortness of Life in English is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger in 49 AD, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to his father-in-law Paulinus. In un’ideale biblioteca di "classici per il terzo millennio",sarebbe difficile escludere un testo come il De brevitate vitae. Questo breve trattato, parte dei dialoghi filosofici di Seneca, è infatti un’attenta e incalzante riflessione sul tempo, sul suo valore e sull’uso distorto che ne fanno gli uomini affaccendati (gli occupati), che nell’incessante rincorsa a ricchezze, prestigio e potere finiscono col dissipare proprio il tempo, il bene più prezioso di tutti. Un’analisi molto lucida, resa particolarmente incisiva grazie a quello stile franto, paratattico e sentenziose che è cifra caratteristica della prosa senecana.
