Entre los deberes espirituales de su sacerdocio y las ataduras temporales de su entorno, los curas de almas en la monarquía hispánica vivieron complejos procesos relacionados con la administración parroquial, las gestiones episcopales y reales, y la búsqueda de ascensos en sus trayectorias clericales. En un contexto definido por el regalismo borbónico, los clérigos que asumieron el ministerio parroquial aunaron el servicio sacramental con vinculaciones a proyectos en las corporaciones civiles y eclesiásticas. Curas en la diócesis de Popayán: la carrera eclesiástica y el regalismo borbónico, 1770-1808 es el resultado de un esfuerzo por estudiar las carreras eclesiásticas de los curas del obispado de Popayán a finales del siglo xviii. La adscripción al estamento clerical, la movilidad parroquial, la vida política del curato, la potestad judicial de los vicarios y las redes y espacios de promoción son asuntos que se analizan a partir de la consulta de distintos archivos históricos y se entienden desde una perspectiva que concibe las circunstancias de los ministros de lo sagrado en relación con las dinámicas imperiales en ambas orillas del Atlántico. Esta atención sobre las características institucionales y políticas de los curas ha permitido esbozar unas breves apreciaciones sobre las condiciones del clero secular, la naturaleza de la política eclesiástica borbónica y las relaciones entre los delegados de las majestades temporal y espiritual. El lector descubrirá que en los procesos imperiales y episcopales se constata y presenta el devenir de aquellos que, apartados pero en el mundo, aspiraron al servicio de las almas en un espacio determinado de las Indias meridionales.
