El 2 de agosto del año 2011 fue la fecha que AC, una periodista solitaria extremadamente racional y apática, seleccionó para lanzarse de un alto edificio abandonado, en Usaquén, un barrio de Bogotá. Para llevar a cabo su proyecto se sumerge en el arte suicida y va evocando en el cine, la literatura y la música los suicidios más impactantes de la historia. En su búsqueda, AC se encuentra con una mujer que le hace dudar de sus intenciones, y poco a poco sus sentimientos contrariados de amor y autodestrucción la llevan a vivir situaciones inimaginables. En medio de muchas historias y muertes, cercanas y lejanas, AC se encuentra entre el mundo bogotano y los paisajes cundiboyacences, describiendo escenarios y personajes de la gente del común, de una cultura violenta y sensible, despreciando a su familia tradicionalista, y poniendo en relieve sus demonios más ocultos y sus sentimientos más tranquilos.

This text is designed for use in college 3rd-4th year Spanish language classes. Each of the fifteen chapters begins with a brief selection in Spanish from a recent Spanish-language publication. Following the reading selection a questionnaire based on the content of the reading material channels the student into using vocabulary employed in the reading. Three topics are then given, suggested by the content of the reading and designed to provoke conversation in class or to serve as themes for compositions. The second part of each chapter is a study of language difficulties often encountered by American students at the junior or senior level of Spanish language study. Each of these sections is based on a word or phrase appearing in the reading. The third section of each chapter is a grammar lesson which presents one of the principal topics of Spanish syntax, stressing those points of the topic which continue to be problematical to advanced students. Each grammar section consists of a clearly worded explanation of the basic theory underlying the topic under discussion, which is further clarified by a large number of example sentences.

For much of the nineteenth century and all of the twentieth, the per capita rate of suicide in Cuba was the highest in Latin America and among the highest in the world--a condition made all the more extraordinary in light of Cuba's historic ties to the Catholic church. In this richly illustrated social and cultural history of suicide in Cuba, Louis A. Perez Jr. explores the way suicide passed from the unthinkable to the unremarkable in Cuban society. In a study that spans the experiences of enslaved Africans and indentured Chinese in the colony, nationalists of the twentieth-century republic, and emigrants from Cuba to Florida following the 1959 revolution, Perez finds that the act of suicide was loaded with meanings that changed over time. Analyzing the social context of suicide, he argues that in addition to confirming despair, suicide sometimes served as a way to consecrate patriotism, affirm personal agency, or protest injustice. The act was often seen by suicidal persons and their contemporaries as an entirely reasonable response to circumstances of affliction, whether economic, political, or social. Bringing an important historical perspective to the study of suicide, Perez offers a valuable new understanding of the strategies with which vast numbers of people made their way through life--if only to choose to end it. To Die in Cuba ultimately tells as much about Cubans' lives, culture, and society as it does about their self-inflicted deaths.

The Heart in the Glass Jar begins with one man's literal heart (that of a prominent statesman in mid-nineteenth-century Mexico) but is truly about the hearts, bodies, legal entanglements, and letters--as both symbols and material objects--of northern Mexicans from the 1860s through the 1930s. William E. French's innovative study of courtship practice and family formation examines love letters of everyday folk within the framework of literacy studies and explores how love letters functioned culturally and legally. French begins by situating love letters in the context of the legal system, which protected the moral order of families and communities and also perpetuated the gender order--the foundation of power structures in Mexican society. He then examines reading and writing practices in the communities that the letters came from: mining camps, villages, small towns, and the "passionate public sphere" that served as the wider social context for the love letters and crimes of passion. Finally, French considers "sentimental anatomy," the eyes, hearts, souls, and wills of novios (men and women in courting relationships), that the letters gave voice to and helped bring into being. In the tradition of Carlo Ginzburg's The Cheese and the Worms and Natalie Zemon Davis's The Return of Martin Guerre, French connects intimate lives to the broader cultural moment, providing a rich and complex cultural history from the intersection of love and law.

De 1850 a 1914, los médicos constituyen la escritura de los marginales en objetos reveladores de la verdad. Al leer las escrituras ordinarias, descubren objetos inquietantes, como escritos que escapan a su clave de lectura, signos gráficos que parecen testimoniar en carácter anormal de su autor y, finalmente, rasgos gráficos que revelan patologías desconocidas. Así pues, se trata de descifrar los escritos de los marginales para determinar sus características. Se procura identificar los signos que indican el grado de normalidad del escribiente. Se observa el gesto gráfico, al fin de aislar las patologías propias del mecanismo de la escritura. Por último, debido al entusiasmo por la grafología, la medicina trata de clarificar las claves que ella utiliza. De este modo, los médicos hacen entrar a la escritura en el laboratorio. Estos conocimientos inducen muchas modificaciones en la sociedad de fines de siglo. Así, se reconsidera el peritaje, se renueva la enseñanza de la escritura y se modifica su práctica profesional.
