El autor, Académico de número de la Real de la Historia y doctor en Derecho, es un incansable investigador de nuestro pasado medieval. En esta segunda edición de su tesis doctoral, se ha propuesto exponer los aspectos histórico-jurídicos de la Casa del Rey de Castilla y León en el ámbito cronológico medieval, desde los primeros tiempos de la monarquía ovetense hasta el reinado de Enrique IV. Con ello pretende llenar un vacío historiográfico injustificado y demostrar la importancia de este órgano colaborador del Rey en el conjunto de la monarquía medieval. Estudia el funcionamiento y composición de la Casa del Rey, tanto desde el punto de vista institucional como desde la perspectiva puramente política del gobierno de la antigua Monarquía, todo lo cual no ha merecido por parte de los estudiosos el interés que hubiera sido deseable. También analiza la caracterización jurídico-administrativa de los diferentes oficiales palatinos de la Casa del Rey, así como su posible estructura orgánica y, finalmente, establece la lista de los grandes oficiales mediante un estudio prosopográfico nunca realizado hasta la fecha.

The Triumph of an Accursed Lineage analyses kingship in Castile between 1252 and 1350, with a particular focus on the pivotal reign of Alfonso XI (r. 1312–1350). The ideas and motifs used to extoll royal authority, the territorial conceptualisation of the kingdom, the role queens and the royal family played, and the interpersonal relationship between the kings and the nobility were all integral to this process. La Edad Media es la época en la que se sitúan las raíces de Castilla y León. En esos lejanos siglos se constituyeron primero el reino, y luego imperio, de León, y a continuación el condado, más tarde reino de Castilla. En la época de la génesis de los dos núcleos citados había diferencias notables entre ambos. No obstante, a partir del siglo XI no sólo se produjo la unión de los reinos de Castilla y León, sino que tuvo lugar una indudable aproximación entre los territorios castellanos y leoneses, tanto en el ámbito de las estructuras sociales como en el de las instituciones y en el de la vida cultural. Hubo, eso sí, una profunda crisis en el transcurso del siglo XV, pero a finales de la centuria siguiente, bajo la dirección de los Reyes Católicos, se dió un paso decisivo en orden a la creación de la monarquía hispánica. Ahora bien, en las primeras décadas del siglo XVI, cuando era rey Carlos I, la corona de Castilla fue escenario de la sublevación de las Comunidades, acontecimiento que ha dejado profunda huella en estas tierras.

Con presente trabajo el autor, académico de número de la Real de la Historia, ha elaborado un corpus genealógico que engloba a todas las grandes familias de la Edad Media peninsular. Se exponen así las distintas dinastías soberanas desde el siglo VIII hasta los Reyes Católicos. Además de la monarquía asturleonesa, de la navarra y de la aragonesa, se incluyen las de los condados catalanes y los primitivos condados de Castilla, Aragón y Ribagorza. El autor añade también la monarquía portuguesa, puesto que ésta es una derivación de la vieja dinastía castellano leonesa y, hasta el siglo XVII, estuvo íntimamente relacionada con los otros territorios peninsulares. Sin su presencia no se podría entender la historia dinástica del conjunto de los reinos de España durante la Edad Media. El lector debe tener en cuenta que no existe hasta la fecha ninguna obra de conjunto sobre las dinastías medievales españolas. Fernández de Béthencourt inició a fines del siglo XIX, con su Historia Genealógica y Heráldica de la Monarquía Española, un intento de recopilación que, además de inconcluso, está hoy completamente superado, pues utilizó poco las fuentes documentales y se limitó a recopilar, en la mayoría de los casos, lo ya escrito por los antiguos genealogistas, especialmente por Salazar y Castro. De esta manera, el libro colma una importante laguna en nuestra bibliografía histórica.
