La casa y el caracol llevac omo subtítulo Para una semiótica del cuerpo y con ello se indica que el tema de este volumen es la relación de complementariedad y oposición -de intimidad y extrañeza- entre el sujeto y esta criatura a la que nunca acaba de conocer y en la que nunca acaba de instalarse. SItuado en el umbral entre el sujeto y el mundo, el cuerpo pertenece a la vez a uno y a otro: es la forma visible del sujeto a la vez que una cosa situada entre las cosas. Mismidad y otredad del sujeto. Los suvesivos capítulos de libro están dedicados a estudiar las sustancias y las formas que el cuerpo por un lado expulsa ( la voz, las lágrimas y otras secreciones) y por otro lado absorbe e incorpora ( la luz y los objetos que ella pone ante sus ojos, el aire que aspira, las percepciones que lo invaden). En suma: los múltiples recorridos simbólicos y significantes que se despliegan entre los extremos del sentir y el percibir. Una característica del libro es que, dadas las materias de que se ocupa, el autor busca lograr un estilo de escritura que en su propia conformación exponga el objetivo sometido a estudio. Así, en el estilo de este libro convergen los afantes estéticos del escritor con el esfuerzo reflexivo, analítico, del investigador.
