Die Monographie untersucht den früh- und hochgotischen Kirchenbau in der Westschweiz und hat als erste umfassende Darstellung dieses Themas den Charakter eines Handbuchs. Die zum Schluss aufgeworfene Frage, inwieweit die Westschweiz im abgesteckten Zeitrahmen (1170–1350) hinsichtlich ihrer Architektur eine eigenständige Kunstlandschaft ausbildet, wird vom Autor mit gewissen Einschränkungen bejaht. Zahlreiche Abbildungen, ein Monumentenkatalog und eine ausführliche Bibliographie ergänzen die Darstellung.
