Excerpt from La Chancun De Willame: An Edition of the Unique Manuscript of the Poem With Vocabulary and a Table of Proper Nouns The aim of this book is to present to students the Chancun de Willame as it appears in the unique manuscript of the poem now in the possession of the British Museum. There is a growing demand among scholars here and in France for the exact reproduction of the manuscripts of the medieval epics, rather than for critical editions. This demand is perhaps best expressed by M. Bedier who, in the preface to the Lai de l'Ombre (Publications de la Societe des Anciens d104es, vol. 70, 1913, p. xlv), inveighs against "des textes tres ingenieusement constitues sans doute et tres savamment, mais composites, en des editions ou il est difficile, tant l'appareil critique en est complique, de demeler en quelle mesure les editeurs se sont permis de collaborer avec les vieux ecrivains."
