L’8 dicembre 2020 ricorrono i 55 anni dalla fine del Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II per molte ragioni è considerato come l'evento più notevole della Chiesa del secolo ventesimo. Sì, il Concilio continua perché esso è stato ed è una pietra miliare nella storia della Chiesa e nella teologia della storia. Nessuno storico, degno di questo nome, potrà mai ignorarlo. In realtà il Concilio continua la sua opera di rinnovamento e di riforma. Costituzioni, Decreti, Dichiarazioni fanno parte del patrimonio della Chiesa. La ricerca di una autenticità cristiana, che è stata la continua preoccupazione pastorale ed ecumenica dei Padri conciliari, ha offerto alla Chiesa un nuovo splendore. Essa si rivolge al mondo additando Cristo Luce delle genti e illuminare tutti gli uomini con la luce di Cristo che risplende sul volto della Chiesa. Il Concilio ha posto le premesse del nuovo cammino della Chiesa nella società contemporanea. Pur essendo la stessa di ieri, la Chiesa vive e realizza in Cristo il suo "oggi", che ha preso il via soprattutto dal Vaticano II. A 55 anni dalla sua conclusione una certezza è indefettibile: il Concilio Vaticano II è un Concilio autentico. Un Concilio ancora da realizzare in molte delle sue istanze; forse alle splendide promesse conciliari non ha fatto seguito una agognata stagione di fioritura. Ma l’insegnamento del Vaticano II e le sue innovazioni, pur in assenza di valore dogmatico, costituiscono un innegabile magistero conciliare, e quindi supremo e solenne.

The Second Vatican Council is the single most influential event in the 20th century history of the Catholic Church. The book analyzes the relationship between the Council and the "Ostpolitik" of the Vatican through the history of the Hungarian presence at Vatican II. Pope John XXIII, elected in 1958, was a catalyst. The pope thought that his most urgent task was to renew contacts with the Church behind the iron curtain. Hungarian participation at the Council was also made possible by the new, pragmatic model in Hungarian church politics. After the crushing of the 1956 Revolution, churches in Hungary thought that the regime would last and were willing to compromise. Vatican II – in the perspective of Hungary – was not primarily an ecclesial event, but it remained closely joined to the negotiations between the Holy See and the Kádár regime: during the Council Hungary became the experimental laboratory of the Vatican's new eastern policy. Was it a Vatican decision or a Soviet instruction? Fejérdy suggests that it was a decision of the Holy See.
