Borget se distinguent par une fidélité scrupuleuse, et les récits de M. Old Nick résument avec charme les plus récentes notions qu’on possède sur le Céleste Empire. On ne peut que faire bon accueil à des publications qui, sous prétexte d’amuser les yeux, atteignent un but moins frivole en donnant une forme attrayante à l’étude et à la description des pays lointains... » (Revue des Deux Mondes, 1844). Paul-Emile Daurand-Forgues, connu sous le pseudonyme de Old Nick, est un journaliste, critique littéraire et écrivain né à Paris (1813-1883). On lui doit diverses traductions en français d’auteurs anglais ainsi qu’une Histoire de Nelson et deux récits de voyage : La Révolte des Cipayes (1861) et La Chine ouverte (1845).
