Ce travail a pour objet d'analyser la vision de l'histoire de Sébastien Franck à partir d'une étude de la Chronique publiée en 1531 et rééditée par ses soins en 1536. Le travail de compilation et les stratégies d'écriture développées par l'auteur révèlent l'influence de l'histoire sur l'évolution du savoir et des connaissances. La remise en cause des vérités d'autorité conduit à une révolution copernicienne de l'esprit : à un savoir clos se substitue une pensée ouverte qui reconnaît un potentiel de vérité dans des pensers différents. L'écriture de l'histoire, seconde révélation et pendant de l'Ecriture, se mue en quête de l'humain : à l'aune de l'histoire se dessine un idéal de fraternité et de tolérance qui constitue une étape importante d'un processus d'hominisation fondé sur la prise de contact avec des temps et des espaces différents. A ce titre, la Chronique est un " document historique " dont l'analyse représente une contribution importante à l'histoire des mentalités.

Cet ouvrage met en évidence le rôle joué par l'histoire au début du XVIe siècle, gr'ce à une analyse détaillée du texte de la Chronique publié par Sébastien Franck en 1531. Interdite suite à une plainte d'Erasme, cette Chronique révèle l'importance de l'histoire non seulement comme support de sa quête de vérité mais aussi comme vecteur d'une autre vérité. Or, malgré cette importance manifeste, les travaux en langue française se contentent dans la plupart des cas d'analyses succinctes des passages les plus marquants de la Chronique et se fondent globalement sur les acquis de la recherche allemande considérés comme autant d'éléments intangibles. Après un aperçu biographique, une analyse des ouvrages publiés par Sébastien Franck avant la Chronique - Diallage en 1528, Klagbrief en 1529 et Türkenchronik en 1530 - éclaire les raisons qui conduisent Franck à faire le choix de l'histoire. Une analyse des différentes préfaces qui rythment la Chronique, tout particulièrement la fameuse Préface de l'Aigle, révèle le sens du projet franckien: la Chronique est le pendant expérimental de la dimension spirituelle de la Bible. La révélation progressive du caractère subversif de cette démarche résulte des réponses apportées à deux questions: comment Franck se sert-il de ses textes référents, c'est-à-dire comment se fait l'intégration du savoir historique hérité du passé? Comment s'établit la relation historique d'un point de vue strictement formel? Les stratégies d'écriture et de ré-écriture - mises au jour gr'ce notamment à l'étude de l'influence de la fameuse Chronique de Hartmann Schedel publiée en 1493 - montrent comment, par restructuration et recomposition d'un ouvrage de référence, la compilation n'est pas simple copie, mais image réfléchie et reconstituante du monde.

Toleration and Tolerance in Medieval European Literature aims to examine and unearth the critical investigations of toleration and tolerance presented in literary texts of the Middle Ages. In contrast to previous approaches, this volume identifies new methods of interpreting conventional classifications of toleration and tolerance through the emergence of multi-level voices in literary, religious, and philosophical discourses of authorities in medieval literature. Accordingly, this volume identifies two separate definitions of toleration and tolerance, the former as a representative of a majority group accepts a member of the minority group but still holds firmly to the believe that s/he is right and the other entirely wrong, and tolerance meaning that all faiths, convictions, and ideologies are treated equally, and the majority speaker is ready to accept that potentially his/her position is wrong. Applying these distinct differences in the critical investigation of interaction and representation in context, this book offers new insight into the tolerant attitudes portrayed in medieval literature of which regularly appealed, influenced and shaped popular opinions of the period.
