In recent years, European societies and territories have witnessed the spatial impacts of a severe financial and socio-economic crisis. This book builds on the current debate concerning how cities and urban regions and their citizens deal with the consequences of the recent financial and socio-economic crisis. Cities in Crisis examines the political and administrative implications of austerity measures applied in southern European cities. These include cuts in local public spending and the processes of privatization of local public assets, as well as issues related to the re-scaling, recentralization or decentralization of competencies. Attention is paid to the rise of new ‘austerity regimes’, the question of their legitimacy and their spatial manifestations, and in particular to the social consequences of austerity. The contributions to this book lay the foundation for recommendations on how to improve and consolidate qualified governance arrangements in order to better address rapid economic and social changes. Such recommendations are applicable to cities and urban regions both within and outside of Europe. It identifies possible approaches, tools and partnerships to tackle the effects of the crisis and to prepare European cities for future challenges.

¿Crisis del periodismo? Claro. Pero no es nueva. No hay que confundirla con los efectos de la crisis económica que se inicia a partir de 2007-2008. La crisis del periodismo está ahí, casi desde siempre, desde el momento en que los periodistas tropiezan con 6 “Pes”: - la P de Propiedad de los medios que proyectan la información, - la P de Publicidad, - la P de la influencia Política, - la P de Producción de la noticia sobre la base de redacciones pasivas a las que “se les olvida” salir a la calle a buscar noticias propias y transgresoras, - la P de Públicos que van buscando aquello que desean oír y no aquello que sucede, y - la P de Periodismo en forma de periodistas más cercanos a sus empresas y a lobbies de poder que al propio Periodismo. La crisis del periodismo es un reflejo fiel de la crisis del sistema de mercado, cau-sante de una sociedad angustiada e insolidaria. Si el sistema de mercado se siente inseguro en el laberinto que él mismo ha creado, pero a la vez es dueño del periodismo “de masas”, lo más habitual es que al receptor le llegue un periodismo “light” dominado por las pugnas políticas, el acoso y derribo al disidente, las catástrofes y sucesos, el entretenimiento (no inocente), el sensacionalismo, amarillismo el periodismo “rosa”, el deporte y la información meteorológica. El poder público sirve para centrar en él casi todas las “bofe-tadas” porque, ¿cómo morder la mano de tu señor? Sin embargo, el poder del mundo no es exactamente público sino privado. Como el periodismo se ha alejado de los ciudadanos, los ciudadanos bus-can su información en otros lugares alternativos, así ha ido creciendo la crisis del periodismo que se ha agravado con la crisis de un sistema que busca nuevos modelos de negocio en muchas ocasiones a costa del periodismo. Menos mal que, al mismo tiempo, aparecen iniciativas, aún por consolidarse, que aportan una esperanza para el desarrollo del conocimiento.

This book analyses the origin and evolution of the water supply service in Andalusia (southern Spain) between 1800 and 2020 from several perspectives. This authoritative study of colonialism in the Spanish empire at the end of the eighteenth century examines how the Spanish metropole attempted to preserve the links to its richest colony in the western Atlantic, New Spain (Mexico), in the face of international developments. Continuing the approach in Silver, Trade, and War and Apogee of Empire, Barbara and Stanley Stein detail Spain’s ad hoc efforts to adjust metropolitan and colonial institutions, structures, and ideology to the pressures of increased competition in the Old and New worlds. In reviewing the attempts at reform, the authors explore networks of individuals and groups, some accepting and others rejecting the Spanish transatlantic trade system. They provide accounts from both sides of the Atlantic to show how economic policy, imperial goals, and consequent social divisions and factionalism in New Spain and Spain undermined the government’s efforts at economic and political adjustments. The Steins draw on a wide range of archival material in Mexico, Spain, and France to place the waning of the Spanish empire in an Atlantic perspective. Regarded as among modern Mexico’s foremost creative writers, Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Carlos Monsiváis, and Elena Poniatowska are also esteemed as analyzers of society, critics of public officials, and both molders and mirrors of public opinion. This book offers a reading of Mexican current affairs from 1968 to 1995 through a comparative study of these four writers’ political work. In hundreds of articles, essays, and comments published in the Mexican press—Excélsior, La Cultura en México, La Jornada, Proceso, and many other publications—these writers tackled current affairs as events unfolded. Yet the lack of detailed examination of their contributions in the press has left a gap in our understanding of their vital role in raising awareness of national concerns as they were happening. Claire Brewster has mined direct quotations from a host of publications to illustrate the techniques that they used in combating government and editorial restraints. Brewster first addresses the Student Movement of 1968—the violent suppression of which was a watershed in the relationship between the Mexican government and people—and illustrates the ways in which the student crisis affected the writers’ relationships with presidents Luis Echeverría Alvarez and José López Portillo. She next considers the profound social and political repercussions of the 1985 earthquake as described by Poniatowska and Monsiváis and the consequent emergence of Mexican civil society. She then outlines Paz’s and Monsiváis’s vociferous responses to the 1988 presidential election campaigns and their highly contentious result, and lastly she examines the Chiapas rebellion from January to July 1994. The eloquent Zapatista spokesman, Subcomandante Marcos, challenged Mexican writers to a duel of words, and Brewster analyzes the ways in which the four writers took up the gauntlet—and in so doing reveals the development of their political thoughts and their relationships with the Mexican people and the federal government.
