En évoquant ses années d'adolescence, partagées entre le pensionnat au collège de Saint-Gaudens et la modeste ferme de ses grands-parents où, très tôt, il participe aux travaux des champs, l'auteur nous invite à découvrir la vie d'un village d'environ 600 habitants, situé dans le Piémont pyrénéen de la Haute-Garonne, qui surgit du passé avec sa vie rurale quotidienne à l'ancienne et son bilinguisme français-patois, plus exactement français-gascon. La départementale qui traverse l'agglomération d'un bout à l'autre et inflige aujourd'hui aux riverains le supplice du bruit et de la pollution tant le trafic y est intense, était alors un havre e paix et de convivialité. Elle appartenait aux piétons, aux attelages et aux troupeaux qui la parcouraient d'un pas nonchalant. Les voitures particulières avaient quasiment disparu du paysage. Le récit embrasse en effet les années tragiques de la guerre, de la défaite, de l'Occupation et de la libération. C'était l'époque du rationnement, puis de la disette et de la pénurie générale qui avaient engendré un marché noir de plus en plus florissant. Les petits trafics, la débrouille aidaient à subvenir aux besoins élémentaires de l'existence quotidienne. L'auteur n'a rien inventé ; tout ce qu'il rapporte s'est réellement passé. Il a essayé de rendre aussi fidèlement que possible les propos entendus autour de lui, ses pensées et sentiments à cette époque. Son livre est, en d'autres termes, une chronique des années 1940 à 1946.

The sixty French texts edited here are all direct commentaries, by contemporary authors, on the French language in the 17th century. By this time, French had begun to assert its independence; in its written and printed form it was being used for a wide variety of literary, technical and administrative purposes. Its practitioners not only successfully challenged the hitherto dominant position of Latin, but also began, for the first time, to discuss and analyse for its own sake the language which was now their preferred medium for expression -- hence, in the first half of the seventeenth century, a growing number of publications on the nature and characteristics of French.
