«La violenza maritale è stato un elemento fisiologico e accettato del matrimonio, legalmente fino a tutto l'Antico Regime, socialmente ben oltre. E occorre ovviamente tener sempre presente che il 'sommerso' in questa materia fu – un tempo come e più di oggi – di enormi dimensioni, anche se le mogli d'Antico Regime non erano affatto inerti dinanzi alle vessazioni coniugali, e anche se le istituzioni medievali e moderne furono spesso tutt'altro che svagate nell'affrontarne gli abusi più eclatanti. Quel che resta di tanti 'inferni coniugali' nelle loro formulazioni giudiziarie rappresentò – un tempo come e più di oggi – la punta di un iceberg. Dietro alle mura domestiche si occultò un'infinità di violenze, talora gravi, talora modeste, talora nemmeno avvertite come tali e accettate con rassegnato fatalismo. Un certo modo di intendere la violenza coniugale è, sul piano formale, definitivamente tramontato, ma sulle leggi continuano a piovere le meteoriti sociali del vecchio ordine.» Marco Cavina interpreta le fonti dottrinali (i teologi, i precettisti morali, i giuristi, i politici), consulta le fonti letterarie e quelle processuali, le confronta con la cultura dominante dal Medioevo in poi per esaminare gli ambiti nei quali maggiormente la violenza si è manifestata, facendoci scoprire l'anima nera del matrimonio dietro lo stereotipo tranquillizzante dell'armonia del focolare.
