Não sendo nosso objectivo, com este breve estudo, empreender uma análise exaustiva de todas as peças de prata de carácter sacro pertencentes à igreja de Santo António dos Portugueses em Roma, pretendemos porém efectuar uma primeira abordagem de tal acervo, de molde a trazê-lo ao conhecimento do público e despertar assim o eventual interesse de outros especialistas, bem como proporcionar uma primeira análise das peças mais relevantes, proporcionando também o acesso a um primeiro inventário. Começando por uma abordagem genérica do conjunto de prataria religiosa pertencente à igreja de Santo António dos Portugueses de Roma. De seguida concentrar-se-ão atenções nas peças consideradas excepcionais, às quais será concedida uma análise mais detalhada, para depois dar notícia das obras já existentes mas entretanto desaparecidas e das quais conseguimos apurar informação, com base na pesquisa arquivística empreendida, sobretudo no Arquivo do Instituto Português de Santo António e no Archivio di Stato di Roma Con il presente lavoro, che, per motivi di spazio, non potrà fornire un’analisi dettagliata dell’intera argenteria sacra della chiesa di Sant’Antonio dei Portoghesi in Roma, mi propongo di avvicinare il pubblico a tale collezione, e di prenderne in esame gli esemplari più interessanti dal punto di vista artistico, con l’auspicio di destare l’interesse di altri specialisti del settore. Inizialmente, dunque, si propone uno sguardo sinottico sul corredo liturgico, con alcune brevi delucidazioni di ordine storicodescrittivo, per poi porre la lente d’ingrandimento sulle opere di maggior rilievo artistico: l’Urna della Reposizione e la muta di sei candelieri e croce d’altare. Un breve spazio sarà quindi dedicato agli oggetti andati perduti, di cui è stato possibile raccogliere informazioni in documenti conservati presso l’Archivio dell’Istituto Portoghese di Sant’Antonio e nell’Archivio di Stato di Roma TERESA LEONOR M. VALE (1967), laureata in Storia e Storia dell’Arte (1989) presso la Facoltà di Lettere dell’Università di Lisbona e dottore in Storia dell’Arte presso la Facoltà di Lettere dell’Università di Porto (1994) con una tesi dedicata all’importazione di scultura barocca italiana in Portogallo nell’ambito dei rapporti artistici e culturali tra i due paesi nel seicento. Ha anche compiuto studi specialistici in Museologia e Conservazione delle Opere d’Arte. Docente di Storia dell’Arte presso la Facoltà di Lettere dell’Università di Lisbona dal 2012. É autrice di diversi libri e articoli tra i quali i più recenti sono A Escultura Italiana de Mafra (Lisbona, 2002), Escultura Italiana em Portugal no Século XVII (Lisbona, 2004), Diário de um Embaixador Português em Roma (1676-1678) (Lisbona, 2006), , Scultura barocca italiana in Portogallo. An in-depth look at the exquisite metal sculpture of the Roman baroque Roman baroque sculpture is usually thought of in terms of large-scale statues in marble and bronze, tombs, or portrait busts. Smaller bronze statuettes are often overlooked, and the extensive production of sculptural silver—much of which is now lost but can be studied from drawings—is frequently omitted from the histories of art. In this book, Jennifer Montagu enriches our understanding of the sculpture of the period by investigating the bronzes that adorn the great tabernacles of Roman churches; gilded silver, both secular and ecclesiastical; elaborately embossed display dishes; and the production of medals. Concentrating on selected pieces by such master sculptors as Bernini and leading metal-workers such as Giovanni Giardini, Montagu examines the often tortuous relationship between patrons and artists and elucidates the relationship between those who provided the drawings or models and the craftsmen who executed the finished sculptures.
