A lo largo de veinte años, Balzac escribió dieciséis horas diarias. El resultado de este esfuerzo titánico se materializó en la escritura de noventa y cinco novelas. En sólo tres años escribió más de veinte, alentado por su relación amorosa con la condesa polaca Eveline Hanska. Entre ellas figuran tres de las cuatro que se incluyen en este volumen, dentro de la serie Escenas de la vida de provincia: El ilustre Gaudissart (1832), Eugénie Grandet (1834) y La musa de la provincia, que comenzó a escribir en 1832 y revisó en 1837, año de su publicación. En 1841 publicó Ursule Mirouët. De estas obras, la más célebre es Eugénie Grandet, que lo consagró como escritor y que tiene la particularidad de que ser una novela cerrada, sin conexión con el resto de las que integran La Comedia humana. La historia transcurre entre 1819 y 1833, en Saumur, y narra los amoríos de Eugénie Grandet, la ingenua hija de Felix Grandet, un acaudalado y avaro tonelero, con un primo que ha venido de París enviado por su padre, hermano de Felix, ante los apuros económicos por los que está pasando. Al mismo tiempo la joven es cortejada por dos pretendientes del pueblo, que sospechan de la fortuna del padre de Eugénie. El ilustre Gaudissart es una novela breve, que Balzac escribió en una noche, y buena parte de ella es el retrato de su protagonista, Gaudissart, un viajante de comercio inventor de técnicas de venta. Ursule Mirouet narra los amores del doctor Minoret con dos mujeres de idéntico nombre: Ursule Mirouët. La primera fue su esposa; la segunda, sobrina nieta de ésta, una huérfana a la que él crió como ahijada y con la que prevé casarse para asegurarle su herencia. En La musa de la provincia se cuenta la vida de la condesa Dinah de La Baudraye (de soltera Piédefer), nacida en una familia protestante, convertida al catolicismo, y huérfana de padre. La mujer reina en Sancerre después de su boda y tras su estancia en París con su amante el periodista Lousteau. Seductora, inteligente y cultivada, ha fundado La Sociedad Literaria y tiene un salón donde la regla es la conversación. De carácter independiente, es una apasionada del coleccionismo y de la literatura (a menudo se la ha comparado con George Sand). La crítica ha visto en Dinah la precursora de Emma Bovary.
