Da_bonfadio fino a' più recenti storiografi il Conte del Fiesco dai più s' ebbe in quel conto in cui suolsi dal dotto volgo tener Catilina. Questa levità di giudizi chiarisce che lo studio delle istorie= non è compito d' anir'ne eunuche e servili. Catilina non manco che il Fiesco fu mal giudicato. Le classiche invettive di Tullio le sallustianc menzogne di tanta facondia condite e l'eco del letterato pecoram-é annebbiarono la maschia figura di Sergio, e dissero abbominanda la di lui causa, che pur fu sposata da quanto di più gentile e di generoso ebbe Roma. Illustre per chiarezza di sangue, forte di clienti e d' amici, preclaro di6 ingegno, prossimo al consolato, spalleggiato da cavalieri, da senatori, da Antonio Ceto, Lentulo, Cetego e da Cesare stesso che non fu straniero alla congiurazione, e da Grasso che appresso ne fu il delatore. Favorito da intere colonie e da municipi, nella Spagna citeriore avvalorato da Gneo Pisone, nella Mauritania da Publio Silio Nocerino e dalle Legioni, capo di tutti i novatori d'italia e delle Gallie, Ca tilina non poteva essere un tristo. Certo non si vogliono escu sate da noi le sue brutture i suoi scomponimenti, i suoi vizi, se pur dobbiam fede a suoi detrattori: ma i propositi ne furono invero nobili ed alti, e nella sua sepoltura si chiuse la libertà tiberina, che il pugnale di Bruto più non valse a svegliare. E per fermo la sua congiura fu un impeto di libertà cui Lucio Silla aveva spento nel sangue. Non ta zione di gente perduta; fu un bisogno vivo non solo in Italia, ove le schiatte latine venivano spodestate dei loro averi e surrogate da mandrie di schiavi; ma ben anche al di fuori. Invano retori astuti ci appresero a maledire il nome del grande Romano, l'ultimo dei Tribuni che lasciava alla storia col proprio sangue una pagina maggior d' ogni invidia; come quello che sulla medesima posta che tenne combattendo, fu morto: imperocche la sua caduta mostri tal virtù d'animo invitto da non potere annidar coi delitti e con le nefandigie di cui si disse sozzo il suo cuore. L' istesso Cicerone confessa essere stato nell' amicizia di Catilina un fascino così prepotente, che poco andò non vi fosse anch' ei preso.
