El arquetipo de esas perso nas, y Russell lo reconoce y describe muy pronto, es ese ciudadano medio que cuenta con ingresos suficientes para su subsistencia, de salud aceptable, que no se encuentra en ninguna situación puntual de sufrimiento extremo y que, sin embargo, no es feliz. La obra se divide en dos partes, perfectamente yuxtapuestas, como dos hemisferios para una cartografía personal de la felicidad: «Causas de la infelicidad» y «Causas de la felicidad». La primera tiene como punto de partida una pregunta diáfana: ¿Qué hace desgraciada a la gente? Y analiza los principales factores que intervienen. Específicamente se detiene en el análisis de lo que denomina la «infelicidad byroniana», así como en la competencia, el aburrimiento y la excitación, la fatiga, la envidia, el sentimiento de pecado, la manía persecutoria y el miedo a la opinión pública.
