Una discusión fundamental de la sociología trata sobre esta pregunta. En sustancia hablamos sobre dos tradiciones que forman polos opuestos en el espectro ciencia-social. Por un lado los planteamientos de la microperspectiva ponen en el centro los actores individuales o colectivos y su acciones que están dirigidas por su significación subjetiva. Por eso hace falta con frecuencia de explicaciones por la constancia del orden social y su estructuras complejas. Comparado con eso el planteamiento complementario examina sobre todo el funcionamiento de estructuras y instituciones sociales que manifiestan como orden social la realidad social y objetiva. De este modo las acciones de los actores sociales están “preestructuradas” y condicionadas. Por eso el planteamiento requiere de explicaciones por la individualidad y el cambio social. Existen diversos intentos de capacidad de persuasión distinto para combinar estos planteamientos, uno de los con más exito es el de Peter L. Berger y Thomas Luckmann en su obra “La construcción social de la realidad”.
