150 ans d’histoire, 150 ans de tourisme en Aquitaine. De sa naissance à son apogée, vivez la plongée au coeur des racines du tourisme aquitain. 150 ans... c’est long et court à la fois, si l’on considère l’accélération des mutations des stations de tourisme et des pratiques touristiques. Avec sa démocratisation et sa massification, le tourisme est passé de quantité négligeable et négligée en Aquitaine à un secteur majeur se distinguant par une forme de développement touristique proche du développement durable et inspirant l’image de marque de la région : c’est la revanche d’une région et d’un secteur économique. En 150 ans, de 1820 à 1988, le tourisme aquitain s’est construit organisé et transformé devenant un secteur socio-économique valorisé. Les profonds changements intervenus durant cette période sont le fruit de l’organisation du secteur touristique par un réseau d’acteurs diversifié et de mutations dans les pratiques touristiques. Les 4S en Aquitaine ont notamment vu le développement du nautisme, du naturisme et du surf Le tourisme passe ainsi d’une activité complémentaire à un secteur économique autonome, de surcroît source de développement local, ce qui prouve son affirmation. En 150 ans, l’identité rêvée et donnée à la côte fluctue : Que reste-t-il de la côte des Landes de Gascogne ? de la Côte d’Argent ? et de la Côte ! Aquitaine ? Trois noms pour un même espace, trois périodes identitaires bien marquées qui font l’originalité de ce littoral. De fait, identité régionale, pratiques sociales, politiques d’aménagement et volonté de développement local ont interagi sur ce littoral avec plus ou moins de force.

Cette étude sur le temps long, quasiment 150 ans, du tourisme moderne, de sa naissance à son apogée, plonge au cœur des racines du tourisme aquitain d'aujourd'hui, à travers l'aménagement touristique qui en est, depuis le départ, la marque indéfectible, sans négliger l'environnement social, politique et économique dans lequel il s'inscrit. Il faut donc étudier comment par la démocratisation et la massification, le tourisme est passé de la marge au cœur du système socio-économique et politique aquitain. En effet, la période qui s'étend des années 1820 aux années 1980 correspond pour le tourisme aquitain à une phase de construction, d'organisation et de mutation de cette activité. Il tend à devenir un secteur socio-économique organisé et valorisé. Le système touristique qui émerge et se développe alors donne naissance à une économie du tourisme au sens premier du terme d'art de bien administrer et gérer une activité. Cette longue période de profonds changements se traduit par l'organisation du secteur touristique par un réseau d'acteurs diversifié, par des mutations dans les pratiques touristiques. Le tourisme passe aussi d'une activité complémentaire à un secteur économique autonome et source de développement local ce qui prouve son affirmation et sa légitimation. Cette étude voit aussi les évolutions identitaires de la côte des Landes de Gascogne puis de la Côte d'Argent et enfin de la Côte Aquitaine, trois noms pour un même espace mais trois périodes identitaires bien marquées qui font l'originalité de ce littoral. De fait, identité régionale, pratiques sociales, politiques d'aménagement et volonté de développement local ont interagis sur ce littoral avec plus ou moins de force sous l'impulsion de divers acteurs plus ou moins puissants et organisés
