Le début du XXIe siècle est le moment de convergence de plusieurs phénomènes dampleur mondiale. Pour autant, le basculement dans le 3e millénaire sidentifie avec laffirmation du tout numérique vecteur dune économie de marché mondialisée à la faveur de laccélération des échanges électroniques, le renouvellement des facteurs de croissance et de compétition économique. Ces facteurs préfigurent lavènement, fin 2014, de la Chine comme première puissance économique mondiale. Désormais, la globalisation des échanges affecte, à la vitesse de la fibre optique, la finance, léconomie, lénergie, les transports, linformation, les sciences, la société, lenvironnement, le droit et, bien sûr, la justice. Mais la construction européenne pose encore et toujours question. LEurope, face aux entreprises mondiales, est confrontée à la préservation de son modèle. La théorie du droit, en raison principalement de son attachement à lÉtat-Nation, et le droit international privé peinent à évoluer. Cette tendance a sans doute favorisé lémergence dune régulation transnationale privée. Pour tenter de maîtriser cette concurrence, un mécanisme de mise en oeuvre du pluralisme juridique est nécessaire. Ainsi, face aux défis que pose une société mondialisée, le juge européen apparaît comme un acteur essentiel de la protection dun ordre juridique européen. As of 1st of June 2023, after years of negotiations, setbacks and postponements, the Unitary Patent Package (UPP) enters into force: the European patent with unitary effect (EPUE) becomes a reality and the Unified Patent Court (UPC) starts its activities.Regrettably, the patent regime put in place is not a genuine EU system. Adopted through an enhanced cooperation procedure, it firstly does not include all EU Member States. Secondly, the conditions and the procedure for granting EPUE is in the hands of the European Patent Office, an international organization to which EU is not a party. Lastly, the substantive provisions and the litigation proceedings are defined by an international treaty (the UPC Agreement) to which EU is not a member, and by national laws for the remaining aspects. Such system carves patent law out of the EU legal and judicial orders and reduces the roles of the EU Parliament and Court of Justice. Challenges are numerous in terms of complexity, harmonization objectives, legality, business advantages and wider societal, economic and legal concerns, to name a few.With twenty-eight contributions from academics and practitioners, this book starts with putting the new system into historical, comparative and institutional contexts (Part I) before highlighting some issues under EU law and the perspective of EU integration (Part II). The institutional, jurisdictional and procedural questions raised by the UPC are then addressed (Part III), as well as the innovation and markets issues (Part IV). The last contributions discuss possible improvements and alternatives to the Unitary Patent Package (Part V).

This open access book demonstrates the application of simulation modelling and network analysis techniques in the field of Roman studies. It summarizes and discusses the results of a 5-year research project carried out by the editors that aimed to apply spatial dynamical modelling to reconstruct and understand the socio-economic development of the Dutch part of the Roman frontier (limes) zone, in particular the agrarian economy and the related development of settlement patterns and transport networks in the area. The project papers are accompanied by invited chapters presenting case studies and reflections from other parts of the Roman Empire focusing on the themes of subsistence economy, demography, transport and mobility, and socio-economic networks in the Roman period. The book shows the added value of state-of-the-art computer modelling techniques and bridges computational and conventional approaches. Topics that will be of particular interest to archaeologists are the question of (forced) surplus production, the demographic and economic effects of the Roman occupation on the local population, and the structuring of transport networks and settlement patterns. For modellers, issues of sensitivity analysis and validation of modelling results are specifically addressed. This book will appeal to students and researchers working in the computational humanities and social sciences, in particular, archaeology and ancient history.
