L’histoire est une discipline traditionnellement confiante. Depuis le XIXe siècle au moins, les historiens se sont accordés sur un ensemble de règles et de conventions qui garantissaient tout à la fois la production de connaissances objectives et vérifiables, l’affirmation d’une communauté de métier et l’élaboration d’un récit partagé. Ce sont ces convictions essentielles qu’est venu ébranler le tournant linguistique, qui pose que le langage, loin d’être un medium neutre, participe de la construction du monde dans lequel nous vivons et que nous étudions. Il s’agit d’un moment relativement bref – deux décennies à partir des années 1970 – mais intense, qui, depuis les États-Unis, a été à l’origine de fortes turbulences au sein de l’historiographie et, au-delà, dans toute une part des sciences sociales et des humanités. Dans ses versions les plus radicales, il a pu aboutir à une rupture entre les mots et les choses, au déni de tout rapport à la réalité et à la mise en cause de la possibilité même d’une connaissance du passé. Des questions ont été posées, dont certaines restent ouvertes. L’histoire est aujourd’hui moins assurée de ses certitudes qu’elle ne l’était. Elle est sans nul doute plus inquiète. Les auteurs se proposent de reconstruire à travers cet ouvrage la dynamique d’un mouvement, le patchwork théorique qu’il a mobilisé, pour comprendre l’attraction qu’il a exercée, les polémiques et les rejets qu’il a suscités, en replaçant le tournant linguistique dans le cadre plus large du moment postmoderne qui, dans les mêmes années, traduit le sentiment d’un épuisement des valeurs et des formes sociales, politiques, culturelles, associées à la modernité.
