Que sont devenues les grandes intuitions théologiques et pastorales de l'Eglise latino-américaine ? A la suite du Concile, quelques évêques prophétiques avaient jeté les fondements d'un renouveau remarquable à travers la Conférence de Medellin (1968). Depuis lors, ces orientations ont connu pas mal d'avatars. Récemment, la Conférence d'Aparecida (2007) a relancé une dynamique missionnaire dans un paysage ecclésial qui s'était rétréci. Luis Martinez Saavedra dresse un tableau très documenté des cinquante dernières années du parcours de l'Eglise latino-américaine. Il passe en revue les conférences générales du CELAM, y compris celle d'Aparecida. Il donne aussi des informations peu connues sur le projet Parole et Vie de la CLAR (Conférence des religieux) et sur l'opposition qu'il a rencontrée. Après avoir tracé les grands axes de la pastorale de libération en Amérique latine, il présente ce qu'il appelle la " philanthropie " de Dieu comme fondement de la praxis ecclésiale. Il estime enfin que l'Eglise latino-américaine peut aider les Eglises-soeurs à affronter les défis actuels.
