Depuis Paul de Tarse et jusqu'au Concile Vatican II, la conversion des juifs au christianisme revêt une importance particulière. Le fait que des juifs, membres du peuple "élu" par le même Dieu que celui des chrétiens, choisissent de se convertir à la religion du Christ était présenté comme la preuve la plus éclatante de la véracité du christianisme. Dans l'Europe moderne, la conversion n'était pas seulement un acte individuel; elle revêtait une dimension sociale et politique dans un système juridique définissant l'Homme non seulement par sa place au sein de la société mais encore en fonction de sa religion. Avec le mouvement des Lumières, l'attitude à l'égard des juifs commença à se modifier au nom de la tolérance et de la prétendue nécessité de "régénérer" un peuple tombé en "dégénérescence"?. Au XIXe siècle, la conversion n'entraînait plus forcément une rupture avec le milieu d'origine et l'intégration des juifs à la société n'allait pas nécessairement de pair avec le renoncement au judaïsme. La conversion accompagnait parfois l'engagement pour des idées novatrices: celles de la haskala et des Lumières ou celles héritées de la Révolution française. Pour étudier les multiples facettes de la conversion dix communications ont été rassemblées. Elles exposent, à l'échelle de l'Europe, les motivations de convertis. Cette approche propose donc autant d'arguments pour l'histoire comparée, transnationale ou croisée car seule une comparaison à travers les frontières peut révéler les spécificités et ainsi identifier ce qu'on peut considérer comme unique.

A new investigation that shows how conversionary preaching to Jews was essential to the early modern Catholic Church and the Roman religious landscape Starting in the sixteenth century, Jews in Rome were forced, every Saturday, to attend a hostile sermon aimed at their conversion. Harshly policed, they were made to march en masse toward the sermon and sit through it, all the while scrutinized by local Christians, foreign visitors, and potential converts. In Catholic Spectacle and Rome’s Jews, Emily Michelson demonstrates how this display was vital to the development of early modern Catholicism. Drawing from a trove of overlooked manuscripts, Michelson reconstructs the dynamics of weekly forced preaching in Rome. As the Catholic Church began to embark on worldwide missions, sermons to Jews offered a unique opportunity to define and defend its new triumphalist, global outlook. They became a point of prestige in Rome. The city’s most important organizations invested in maintaining these spectacles, and foreign tourists eagerly attended them. The title of “Preacher to the Jews” could make a man’s career. The presence of Christian spectators, Roman and foreign, was integral to these sermons, and preachers played to the gallery. Conversionary sermons also provided an intellectual veneer to mask ongoing anti-Jewish aggressions. In response, Jews mounted a campaign of resistance, using any means available. Examining the history and content of sermons to Jews over two and a half centuries, Catholic Spectacle and Rome’s Jews argues that conversionary preaching to Jews played a fundamental role in forming early modern Catholic identity.

Throughout the nineteenth century, German philosophy was haunted by the specter of the French Revolution. Kant, Hegel and their followers spent their lives wrestling with its heritage, trying to imagine a specifically German path to modernity: a “revolution without revolution.” Trapped in a politically ossified society, German intellectuals were driven to brood over the nature of the revolutionary experience. In this ambitious and original study, Stathis Kouvelakis paints a rich panorama of the key intellectual and political figures in the effervescence of German thought before the 1848 revolutions. He shows how the attempt to chart a moderate, reformist path entered into crisis, generating two antagonistic perspectives within the progressive currents of German society. On the one side were those socialists—among them Moses Hess and the young Friedrich Engels—who sought to discover a principle of harmony in social relations, bypassing the question of revolutionary politics. On the other side, the poet Heinrich Heine and the young Karl Marx developed a new perspective, articulating revolutionary rupture, proletarian hegemony and struggle for democracy, thereby redefining the very notion of politics itself.

Cet ouvrage contribue, à partir d'études de cas empruntées au passé de la France et de l'Allemagne, à une réflexion sur les problèmes que pose la transition de la guerre à la paix. Il aborde la question: comment construire la paix à partir d'un angle d'attaque qui fait la part belle à la dimension confessionnelle, dont on sait l'importance -et l'ambivalence- pour la représentation des conflits comme pour la construction de la paix dans l'espace germanique et, dans une moindre mesure, dans l'histoire de la nation française. Il retrace l'évolution qu'ont connue, au fil de quatre siècles, les réflexions sur la guerre et la paix en France et en Allemagne, et il analyse les causes intérieures et extérieures de la fragilité des paix. Un accent est d'abord mis sur les traités de paix de Westphalie qui ont comblé les lacunes de 1555 et offert des garanties juridiques fondamentales. Puis les auteurs montrent comment l'inadéquation s'est creusée, au XVIIIe et au XIXe siècle, entre les théoriciens de la paix et les chantres des conflits, l'adversaire devenant, d'hérétique ou rebelle, l'ennemi de la nation. Les divergences entre chrétiens pacifistes et adeptes d'une forte présence militaire ont alors incité certains protestants à distinguer de plus en plus la sphère privée de la sphère publique. Au XVIe siècle, alors que l’Europe était déchirée par les guerres de Religion, les papes voulurent faire de Rome un modèle pour la conversion des juifs. Sous la protection de Grégoire XIII, deux banquiers séfarades, Salamone Corcos et son fils Lazzaro, appartenant à l’élite de la communauté juive, furent baptisés puis intégrés dans la noblesse romaine sous le nom de Boncompagni, qui était celui du pape. In this study the content and background of La Milletière's irenism are analysed and compared to the irenism of Hugo Grotius, who strove for unity in this same period. The reactions which La Milletière's books and pamphlets provoked are related to the rival groups within each confession: Jansenists versus Jesuits, the scholars of Saumur versus orthodox theologians like Rivet and Du Moulin and the ministers of Charenton. Richelieu's conciliatory religious policy was experienced by the oppressed French Calvinists as a major threat to the integrity of their doctrine. When one of their co-religionists, La Milletière, began to propagate a reunification of Protestants and Roman-Catholics, they did not fail to recognize these irenic proposals as Richelieu's. On the other hand, the Roman Catholics mistrusted this peacemaker as well. This book therefore offers a contribution to the history of irenism, as well as an analysis of the religious situation in France in the first half of the seventeenth century.
