This book explores several aspects of the variegated relationship that connects the operational principles of a structure to its translation into written form, between the laws that govern its structural rationale and the technical solutions that decree the feasibility of its construction. This is considered an essential subject for the training of aspiring engineers, whose education is often strongly conditioned by a didactic approach that divides the knowledge of construction into circumscribed and independent disciplinary units. This same approach negatively connotes the progressive transformation of the professional profile of the contemporary engineer, from the original figure of a designer of technical solutions to that of a specialist-assessor of structural performance. The result is that such figures sometimes lack the critical instruments inherent to a knowledge that does not begin and end within models of scientific explanation, but has to be comprised within a broader cultural dimension featuring the coexistence and mutual nourishment of different branches of knowledge, including History, Science and Design through to the ultimate dynamics of Architecture.

Rafael Guastavino (1842 1908) nació en Valencia y estudió en Barcelona. Allí realizó sus primeras obras con un empleo extensivo de bóvedas tabicadas, que el consideraba un modo Acohesivo distinto de la construcción tradicional. En 1881 emigró América y fundó una empresa para la construcción de bóvedas tabicadas. Fue un exitó y participó en la construcción algunos de los edificios americanos más importantes. El presente volumen recoge la traducción al castellano de os dos libros que publicó en América: El ensayo sobre la construcción cohesiva de 1892 y la Función de la fábrica en la construcción moderna, en 1896 y 1904. Ambos libros contienen numerosas observaciones pertinentes sobre la construcción tabicada,pero, sobre todo, son importantes pues nos ayudan a entender el pensamiento y la obra de quizá el último gran constructor de bóvedas de fábrica.

Gli Atti del VI Congresso Internazionale dell'Ar.Tec. sono in qualche modo rifondativi del settore; hanno riguardato le ricerche svolte in questo settore scientificodisciplinare per farne una panoramica dello stato dell'arte in Italia, un confronto con analoghi temi all'estero e un bilancio di quanto è stato fatto, per ripartire, noi soci, più consapevoli, con nuovo slancio. Tutto questo alla luce dei nuovi rapporti che si stanno instaurando con le società scientifiche a noi più vicine. Il processo che ha portanto a tali risultati è avvenuto tramite un censimento delle ricerche svolte, una sistematizzazione dei vari filoni di ricerca e un confronto - dialogo con altri ricercatori provenienti dall'estero. Pertanto, si è pervenuti a individuare sette “temi” dominanti nelle ricerche svolte, seppur con esiti e numerosità di ricerche diverse. La struttura del volume rispecchia questa impostazione, per cui a fronte dei temi individuati, illustrati a più voci, viene aggiunto il vibrante dibattito - tavola rotonda sulle risultanze dalla giornata congressuale e sulle azioni da intraprendere nel prossimo futuro. L'AR.TEC. - Associazione scientifica per la promozione dei rapporti tra Architettura e Tecniche dell'edilizia - è un'associazione senza scopo di lucro fondata nel 2002. Essa cura la promozione della crescita culturale e professionale dei ricercatori e degli operatori della progettazione, della costruzione e della produzione nell'ambito dell'ingegneria edile e dell'architettura e, parimenti, la massima diffusione delle conoscenze di settore presso le comunità scientifiche e le realtà imprenditoriali e produttive in esso impegnate.
