Entre noviembre de 1932 y marzo de 1933, T.S. Eliot impartio un memorable ciclo de conferencias en la Universidad de Harvard. Estas no tardaron en convertirse en el libro que ahora rescatamos en la magistral traduccion que el poeta Jaime Gil de Biedma entregara a su amigo y editor, y de quien tambien incluimos el iluminador prologo que situa a Eliot en la gran tradicion de la critica anglosajona.Tal vez el vinculo que une tematicamente estos textos sea la aspiracion de ofrecer un nuevo acercamiento a la poesia y la critica, que haga de esta ultima algo mas que la simple sucesion de concepciones de lo que ha de ser la poesia. A cada epoca le corresponde un arte propio (y probablemente nadie mejor que Eliot para analizar la evolucion de las ideas criticas surgidas desde el mundo isabelino hasta nuestro siglo, pasando por el Romanticismo), y la funcion del critico aqui defendida es la de deslindar lo que en poesia hay de permanente de lo que es expresion del espiritu de la epoca. Asi, el critico Eliot nos invita a releer no solo las poesias, sino tambien las poeticas de autores como Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley o Dryden, ayudandonos a comprender la rara mezcla de sensibilidad e inteligencia que se esconde en toda autentica obra de arte.
