Quel est en effet le sens de cette thèse, qui eût paru si étrange il y a deux siècles? La conservation de la personne humaine après la mort, la vie future accompagnée de mémoire, n'est pas un fait dont la réalité soit dé montrable par des raisonnements fondés sur des principes évidents ou dont l'impossibilité se prouve au moyen d'autres principes plus évidents, seuls évidents, au dire d'autres philosophes. Ce n'est pas davantage une garantie donnée aux hommes sans distinction par un Créateur qui, leur assurant l'immortalité à tous, promet aux bons la béatitudc et menace les méchants d'une vie de misère qui ne finira point. Enfin ce n'est ni le ré sultat naturel et infaillible des lois de l'existence et de l'essence, ni l'effet constant de la volonté divine. C'est un fait simplement possible à espérer, et dont la réalisation dépend, pour les différentes personnes, de certaines conditions que ces personnes peuvent remplir ou ne pas remplir dans la vie présente Ajoutons que si, en outre de ces dernières conditions, on en suppose de relatives à une vie ultérieure et à de nouvelles épreuves, la question dans tous les cas se posera de manière à exclure l'hypothèse d'une prolongation et d'une répétition indéfinies de celles - ci, puisque le prolongement sans fin impliquerait l'immortalité essentielle et nécessaire que nous n'admettons pas ici. Debussy's Critics: Sound, Affect, and the Experience of Modernism explores the music of Claude Debussy and its early reception in light of the rise of the empirical human sciences in Western Europe around the turn of the twentieth century. In the midst of a sea change in conceptions of the human person, the critics who wrote about Debussy's music in the Parisian press-continually returning to this music's nebulous relationship to sensation and sensibilité-attempted to articulate a music aesthetic appropriate to the fully embodied, material self of psychological modernism. While scholarship on French music in this period has often emphasized its affinities with other art forms, such as Impressionist painting and Symbolist poetry, Debussy's Critics demonstrates that a preoccupation with the specifically sonic materiality of Debussy's music, informed by late nineteenth-century scientific discourses on affect, perception, and cognition, was central to this music's historical intervention. Foregrounding the dynamic exchange between sounds and ideas, this book reveals the disorienting and bewildering experience of listening to Debussy's music, which compelled its early audiences to reimagine the most fundamental premises of the European art-music tradition.

French philosopher Charles Renouvier played an influential role in reviving philosophy in France after it was proscribed during the Second Empire. Drawn to the ideals of the French Revolution, Renouvier came to recognize that the free will and civil liberties he supported were essential to the pursuit of science, contrary to the ideologies of positivists and socialists who would restrict liberty in the name of science. He struggled against monarchy and religious authority in the period up through 1848 and defended a liberal, secular form of political organization at a critical turning point in French history, the beginning of the Third Republic. As Warren Schmaus argues, Renouvier’s work provides an example of one way in which philosophy of science can succeed in bringing about change in political life—by critiquing political ideologies that falsely claim absolute certainty on religious, scientific, or any other grounds.
