Les campagnes du Hainaut français sont déjà dominées à la fin du Moyen Âge par les « censiers ». Ces moyens et grands exploitants en fermage sont à la tête d'exploitations appelées « censes ». Pourvoyeuses d’emplois et propriétés bien souvent des seigneurs, elles se distinguent par de vastes bâtiments et une cour fréquemment fermée par un porche. Les censiers produisent surtout des céréales, des ovins et des bovins, en plus ou moins grandes quantités selon les terroirs. La préservation des marges bénéficiaires et l’augmentation si possible des profits sont au cœur de leurs préoccupations. Pour y parvenir, ils font preuve d’inventivité et de souplesse, surtout lorsqu’une conjoncture particulière se présente. Dès lors, les dures guerres au terme du règne de Louis XIV et l’exceptionnelle croissance démographique qui suit, ne sont-elles pas pour nos exploitants de formidables opportunités de spéculation et d’innovation? Impliqués dans la gestion de leurs domaines et attentifs à leur rentabilité, les propriétaires seigneuriaux ont tout intérêt à soutenir, voire impulser auprès des censiers, différentes initiatives à l’image des rassemblements fonciers ou de la suppression de la jachère. L’impact socio-économique de ceux-ci ne peut être négligeable. Grâce essentiellement à des témoignages directs (livres de raison), l’ouvrage reconstitue ainsi la contribution marquante des censiers à partir de la fin du XVIIe siècle, à la formation originale de la structure socio-économique des campagnes hennuyères, révélée en pleine lumière au seuil de la Révolution française. Cet ouvrage vient apporter un nouvel éclairage sur la question du changement agricole, objet de nombreuses controverses historiographiques, dans les campagnes de la France du Nord et plus généralement des anciens Pays-Bas méridionaux à l’époque moderne. Auteur: Fulgence Delleaux est Maître de conférences en Histoire moderne à l’Université de Namur. Il est spécialiste de l’histoire économique des campagnes de l’Europe du Nord-Ouest à l’époque moderne.
