Los fundamentos de este libro se basan en que la cueca o chilena es un género poético-musical proveniente de la tradición arábico-andaluza en la que intervienen el canto, instrumentos musicales y la danza. Si bien se ha conservado con mayor pureza en Chile, donde tiene carácter de danza nacional, su dispersión es continental, por lo que podemos considerarla como un valioso patrimonio cultural americano. Las relaciones matemáticas que surgen del desarrollo musical de la poesía, junto con la peculiar impostación de la voz para cantarla, le otorgan a la cueca o chilena una dimensión universal de gran interés, que ha sido destacada en esta obra con el valioso aporte de un cultor de ella, el ex matarife don Francisco González Marabolí. Con él trabajaron los autores, todos profesores e investigadores del Instituto de Música de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Esta segunda edición se presenta con un nuevo diseño de portada, un prólogo de las autoras y es un homenaje a Samuel Claro y Fernando González, cuyo legado sigue presente en el quehacer investigativo y los cultores de la cueca urbana.
